Hepatoprotective Activity of H aliotis discus hannai  Ino Extract on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Liver Damage in Rats

Abstract: The hepatoprotective activity of Haliotis discus hannai Ino extract (HDE) against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced liver damage was investigated in rats. LPS (5 mg/kg body weight) produced hepatic damage that was manifested by significant increases in the activities of marker enzymes (aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase) and reduced antioxidant (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, malondialdehyde) activities. These antioxidant activities were elevated by HDE administration to LPS‐t… Show more

“…1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl is a stable, organic free radical widely used to detect the scavenging activity of the antioxidants ( Debnath et al, 2015 ). The DPPH scavenging activity of methanol extracts of RD leaf and bark at different concentrations are presented in Figure 1A .…”

“…Thus, augmentation of the antioxidant defense system in the body becomes necessary during infections, because redox imbalance is caused by the depletion of endogenous antioxidants, such as the antioxidant enzymes, and alteration of the glutathione redox status [ 19 ]. Numerous studies have tried to find new nutraceutical products with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties from natural sources, including plants or marine materials, to reverse and/or prevent hepatotoxicity [ 20 , 21 , 22 ]. CS demonstrated protective effects against CCl 4 -induced hepatotoxicity, attributed to its free radical-scavenging activity [ 23 ].…”

“…The mechanisms of both fruit extracts mainly depend on the inhibition of oxidation and inflammation. Animal products, such as Chinese traditional fermented yogurt and an extract of abalone ( Haliotis discus hannai Ino), can protect the liver against LPS toxicity with similar mechanisms as mentioned above (Peng & Jiang, ; Debnath et al., ). In addition, in mice or rats treated with LPS plus D‐galactosamine (D‐GaIN), the protective mechanisms of the natural products such as nobiletin from Citrus fruits and echinacoside from Cistanche salsa mainly lie in the activation of Nrf2 and the inhibition of NF‐κB‐mediated cytokine production to ameliorate inflammation and apoptosis (He et al., ; Li et al., ).…”
