Hepatitis C Virus Infection in an Area Hyperendemic for Hepatitis B and Chronic Liver Disease: The Taiwan Experience

Abstract: To assess the contribution of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in liver disease in Taiwan, antibody to HCV (anti-HCV) was studied by radioimmunoassay in 392 patients with chronic liver disease and in 440 healthy adults and 444 subjects at risk. The anti-HCV prevalence was 0.95% in 420 volunteer blood donors, 90% in 100 hemophiliacs, and 81% in 58 parenteral drug abusers. Anti-HCV was present in 6 (7.7%) of 78 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive and 28 (65%) of 43 HBsAg-negative patients with chronic hepatitis,… Show more

“…11 An 80-85% decrease in HCC among Taiwanese adults up to 3-4 decades later is anticipated. 12 The prevalence of anti-HCV antibody (anti-HCV) is 2-4% among the general population of Taiwan, 13 while it ranges from 0.95 to 2.2% in Taiwanese blood donors. 13,14 The anti-HCV prevalence is approximately 60% in HBsAg-negative HCC patients.…”

“…65 We soon learned that HCV infection was also prevalent in Taiwan, and HCV was a common cause of CLD and HCC, second only to HBV. 66 Led by Dr. Pei-Jer Chen, we also cloned and sequenced the whole genome of HCV. 67 Based on these efforts, blood donors were screened with antibody to HCV in Taiwan beginning in 1992, and transfusion-transmitted hepatitis C has been effectively prevented thereafter.…”
