Seroepidemiology of hepatitis A, B, C, and E viruses infection among preschool children in Taiwan

Abstract: Taiwan was a hyperendemic area for hepatitis A and B viruses (HAV and HBV) infection before late 1980s. To study the seroprevalence of hepatitis A, B, C, and E viruses (HCV and HEV) infection among preschool children in Taiwan, a community‐based survey was carried out in 54 kindergartens in 10 urban areas, 10 rural areas, and 2 aboriginal areas randomly selected through stratified sampling. Serum specimens of 2,538 preschool children were screened for the hepatitis A, C, and E antibodies by a commercially avai… Show more

“…A number of crosssectional studies have compared the seroepidemiologic patterns of HAV and HEV infection to address whether there is a common infection pathway(s) [Arankalle et al, 2001;Sidal et al, 2001;Murhekar et al, 2002;Wong et al, 2004;Tanaka et al, 2005;Lin et al, 2006]. These studies suffer from some limitations, because their designs only allowed examination of the seroprevalence pattern of both infections within a community at a single, or at most three time points, and sequential samples were not available from each of the seroconverted individuals.…”

“…These factors may apply to both urban and rural areas, depending mostly on the family's socioeconomic status (SES). Poor socioeconomic and hygiene conditions have been associated with increased occurrence of hepatitis, bacterial, or parasitic infections (24)(25)(26). x The "hygiene hypothesis" has proposed that the increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases can be attributed to improved living conditions, new vaccinations, and use of antibiotics that are responsible for the reduced number of infections in early life (27).…”
