Hepatic lesions in captive owl monkeys (Aotus infulatus) with ultrasonographic “starry sky” liver

Abstract: The "starry sky" (SK) liver is an ultrasonographic pattern in which the hepatic parenchyma presents a homogeneous hypoechogenic appearance associated with hyperechogenic portal triads that results in the observation of multiple hyperechoic foci randomly disseminated in the liver. 1,2 In humans, the SK liver is associated with multiple disorders, such as infectious hepatitis, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, right heart failure, or hepatic neoplasia. 2 In veterinary medicine, ultrasound obse… Show more

“…Hemosiderosis is a common incidental finding among New World Primates kept under human care, being reported in genus like Callithrix, Brachyteles , Lagothrix , and Aotus 30,31 . Its occurrence is related to high levels of iron in the diet, increased endogenous corticosteroids, or chronic inflammation and, although it was present in many cases, it was not associated with the cause of death 30–32 …”

“…30,31 Its occurrence is related to high levels of iron in the diet, increased endogenous corticosteroids, or chronic inflammation and, although it was present in many cases, it was not associated with the cause of death. [30][31][32] Causes of death referent to circulatory system were attributed from metastatic splenic hemangiosarcoma with spleen rupture in an adult male and neonatal triad in a newborn female. Neonatal triad is a serious condition composed by hypothermia, dehydration and hypoglycemia which newborns are susceptible during the first week of life.…”

“…The authors, however, believes that the negative results may be due to a low bacteremia, once the animals from the study were all asymptomatic. Also, bartonellosis was investigated by PCR, Warthin-Starling stain and IHC in two cases of hepatic peliosis in captive owl monkeys (A. infulatus), but no evidence of bacteria was found (204).…”
