Heat transfer in packed-beds of agricultural waste with low rates of air flow applicable to solid-state fermentation

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t s Paper addressed heat transfer in beds packed with agricultural waste. Air flow rate and bed height markedly affected radial temperature profiles. Beds of sugarcane bagasse are nonfavorable for heat transfer. Mixture of particles of different shapes and sizes improves heat transfer. Thermal parameters are useful for reliable simulation of bioreactors.

“…Temporal temperature profiles in a bed of a SCB/WB mixture, with water sprinkling at 65 o C and 2.5 L min -1 and drum rotation at 1 rpm (T in = 45 ºC; RH = 91,53%; Q = 5 L min -1 ; T b,0 = 25 ºC; U b,0 = 50%; T w = 45 ºC). effective thermal properties of agricultural wastes are very low (Casciatori et al, 2013;Casciatori and Thoméo, 2018). The only operational alternatives in packed beds are the increase of the air flow rate and the reduction of the bed wall temperature, alternatives that would cause serious concerns to the cultivation process.…”

“…The multipoint online temperature measurement of solid‐state bioreactors has garnered research interest for a long time . However, because previous reports had not constructed matrices of temperature sensors, an accurate and dense 4D inner bed profile including radius, height, temperature and cultivation time was not provided by real measurement.…”

“…5(a) The multipoint online temperature measurement of solid-state bioreactors has garnered research interest for a long time. [22][23][24][25]27 However, because previous reports had not constructed matrices of temperature sensors, an accurate and dense 4D inner bed profile including radius, height, temperature and cultivation time was not provided by real measurement. In the present work, benefitting from the capacity of 16P-TMS, each batch had more than 170 000 data, enough to provide the 4D profile describing the temperature evolution process at all the temperature measuring points during the whole cultivation batch.…”

“…An airflow through the system [46] was often applied to dissipate metabolic heat from the solid medium and also to supply the oxygen requirements for cultures. But there was a risk of drying out the substrate [47], and ventilation removed a fraction of moisture and fermentation heat during culture while providing oxygen content.…”
