h i g h l i g h t s This paper addresses the study of heat transfer in a particulate system. A bed of glass beads placed in a rotating drum is modeled and simulated. A one-phase two-dimensional heat transfer model is proposed. Parameter optimization is carried out by means of a central composite design. The findings are useful for rotating drums bioreactors of solid-state cultivation.
The mixture and motion of fibrous particles of sugar cane bagasse were experimentally investigated in a rotating drum, a configuration frequently used for bioreactors in solid-state fermentation processes. The rotational velocity, filling degree and presence of an inner tube amidst the particles were the controlled variables. The image analysis technique was used to evaluate the radial and axial mixtures. The numbers of rotations used to achieve radial and axial homogeneities were obtained and the radial particle motion described. The minimum numbers of rotations for radial homogeneity were 12, 15 and 17 for filling degrees of 0.3, 0.5 and 0.6, respectively and this number was not influenced by the presence of the inner tube and the rotation velocity. The radial motion was influenced by all the variables and the flow regimes observed were distinct from those previously described in the literature. The passive layer did not behave as a solid body under any of the experimental conditions tested in the absence of the inner tube. When the tube was inserted, stagnant and fast velocities were observed in its vicinity and a porosity profile was noted in the stagnant zone. For both configurations, agglomerates of particles flowed down the free surface rather than a steady flow of particles. The axial diffusion coefficient was experimentally obtained and the simulated tracer concentration presented good agreement with the experimental results.
Maximum water holding capacity of a mixture of sugarcane bagasse and wheat bran was determined in static conditions and in a drum rotated at 1 rpm. The variables filling degree, water flow rate, volume of added water and number of sprinklers were tested to control the moisture content of the solid and the number of rotations to achieve homogeneous moisture content. None of the selected variables was significant, giving the apparatus high flexibility to control moisture content. For the heat transfer experiments, the tested variables were introduction of air through an inner tube amidst the particles, water sprinkling over the bed and drum rotation. The selected variables represented limited mechanisms of heat removal, although efficient when coupled with the drum rotation. The results are of value to control the temperature and the moisture content in solid-state cultivation bioreactors.
One-phase model have been reported to describing the simultaneous heat and mass transfer in a horizontal drum partially filled by sugarcane bagasse with attention to the loss of water promoted by the increase of temperature. Mass and energy balances were written in MatLab language and solved by finite difference method. Predicted temporal and spatial profiles of moisture content and temperature are shown. Experimental tests were carried out in a horizontal drum and the temporal profiles were obtained. Great adjustments between experimental and predicted data were observed, indicating that the model is able to describe the transport phenomena in this system.
