Introduction/Objective Breast cancer surgery is associated with the risk of developing functional constraints that may negatively affect the quality of patients' lives. The objective of the study was to determine the impact of early postoperative exercises three months after surgery on functional recovery and the quality of life of patients who were operated on. Methods A group of 149 patients was tested, divided by the type of surgery into two groups. The assessment of the quality of life by the SF-36 questionnaire and functional testing were done three months after surgery; the extent of movement in the shoulder joint and of the limbs was measured as well. Results On basic measurements of the quality of life, the average results of SF-36 showed the highest values in the domain of physical functioning, while the lowest value was in the vitality and energy domain. After the realized rehabilitation activities, the results of the SF-36 questionnaire indicated the increase in all domains and components at the significance level of p = 0.001, except for the general health domain (p = 0.04). Preoperatively, a moderate negative association of mobility and the SF-36 questionnaire component with the overall health parameter was determined, whereby the lower value of the SF-36 questionnaire was followed by a larger deviation in the flexion movements and abduction of the shoulder joint. Conclusion The results of our study support the concept of early-initiated rehabilitation interventions and confirm the positive impact on the quality of life of patients operated on for breast cancer in the three-month follow-up period.

BackgroundThe Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS) and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) are patient-based outcome scores with valid psychometric properties which are widely used for shoulder interventions.ObjectiveThe purpose of the study is to adapt both questionnaires cross-culturally to Spanish, and to test their reliability, validity, responsiveness, and feasibility.DesignCultural adaptation and psychometric validation study.MethodsConsecutive patients who had undergone breast cancer surgery referred to an outpatient clinic at the University of Alcalá de Henares, Spain. One hundred and twenty women who had undergone breast cancer surgery, with pain and shoulder dysfunction. Cross-cultural adaptation was performed according to the international guidelines. Reliability was analysed by test-retest reliability and internal consistency. Content and convergent construct validity were measured by the Expert Committee’s and Spearman coefficient respectively. Responsiveness, feasibility, floor and ceiling effects were also tested.ResultsOne hundred and twenty women aged 54.2 (±11) years took part in the study. The reliability was excellent; test-retest reliability was 0.974 (p < 0.001) for OSS, and 0.992 (p < 0.001) for SPADI; and Cronbach’s alpha value was 0.947 for OSS, and 0.965 for SPADI. High construct validity was found between the OSS and SPADI questionnaires (r = −0.674). The effect size (ES) and standardized response mean (SRM) was moderate in OSS (ES = 0.50 and SRM = 0.70 (p < 0.001)), and moderate to good in SPADI (ES = 0.59 and SRM = 0.82 (p < 0.001)).LimitationsThis study has some limitations, such as the group of participants is composed only of women following breast cancer treatment; the measurement took place in a single centre; and all the questionnaires administered were always provided to the participants in the same order.ConclusionsThe OSS and SPADI Spanish versions are applicable, reliable, valid, and responsive to assess shoulder symptoms and quality of life in Spanish women with shoulder pain and disability after breast cancer treatment.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12955-015-0256-y) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Câncer de mama Seroma Drenagem RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar os sentimentos e as dificuldades vivenciadas pelos pacientes durante a utilização de drenos de sucção. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, transversal, que avaliou mulheres portadoras de câncer de mama submetidas ao tratamento cirúrgico e que permaneceram com dreno de sucção por três dias, no mínimo. Foi avaliada a dificuldade para a realização de atividades diárias, gerais e específicas, assim como os sentimentos negativos desencadeados pela utilização do dreno, por intermédio da aplicação de questionário previamente estabelecido. Resultados: Foram incluídas no estudo 77 pacientes, com média de idade de 49 (±13) anos. Entre a população analisada, 53 pacientes (68,8%) deixaram de realizar alguma tarefa por estar com o dreno. Entre as limitações, destacam-se as dificuldades para "vestir-se" (79,2%) e para "dormir" (87,0%). Entre os sentimentos referidos, encontrou-se prevalência de "estranheza" (76,6%) e "medo" (72,7%). Conclusão: Em posse dos resultados observados, o cirurgião deverá considerar para a decisão de utilizar drenos após manipulação axilar em cirurgias mamárias, de um lado, o manejo de serosidades e, de outro, as dificuldades diárias e os sentimentos negativos vivenciados pelos pacientes com a utilização desses sistemas de drenagem.
