Healing of experimental apical periodontitis after apicoectomy using different sealing materials on the resected root end

Abstract: This study evaluated apical periodontal healing after root-end sealing using 4-META/MMA-TBB resin (SB), and root-end filling using reinforced zinc oxide eugenol cement (EBA) or mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) when root canal infection persisted. Apical periodontitis was induced in mandibular premolars of beagles by contaminating the root canals with dental plaque. After 1 month, in the SB group, SB was applied to the resected surface following apicoectomy. In the EBA and MTA groups, a root-end cavity was prep… Show more

“…Tri-n-butyl borane (TBB), a polymerization initiator of SB, is known to promote radical formation in the presence of water, permitting high polymerization of SB under conditions of poor moisture control 6,23) and greater bonding effectiveness than other adhesives in wet environments 11) . Additionally, SB provides a favorable surface for cell attachment 12) , meaning it can be directly applied to soft tissues in procedures such as direct pulp capping [8][9][10] .…”

“…The application of dental adhesive resins is expanding to include various treatments such as the restoration of fractured roots [1][2][3][4] , root-end fillings 5,6) , and perforation sealing 7) . Among a plethora of adhesive resins, those based on 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META)/methyl methacrylate (MMA) exhibit high biocompatibility with the periodontal tissues and excellent bonding and sealing capabilities in wet conditions 3,4,[8][9][10][11] .…”

“…MTA is a type of calcium silicate cement and is used for various treatments such as direct pulp capping, root-end filling, root canal filling, perforation repair, and apexogenesis 37,38) . However, the application of dental adhesive resins is also expanding to include various treatments such as restoration of fractured roots [39][40][41][42] , root-end fillings 43) , or perforation sealing 44) . Among a plethora of dental adhesive resins, a 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META)/methyl methacrylate (MMA)-based resin is highly biocompatible, and exhibits excellent bonding and sealing capabilities in wet conditions 45) .…”
