Head-to-Head Comparison between High-Resolution Microultrasound Imaging and Multiparametric MRI in Detecting and Local Staging of Bladder Cancer: The BUS-MISS Protocol

Abstract: BACKGROUND: MRI has been proposed as a new staging tool for bladder cancer (BC), but use is limited by its high costs and low availability. 29-MHz high-resolution micro-ultrasound (mUS) technology has been suggested as an alternative to detect BC and distinguish between muscle-invasive and non-muscle invasive BC. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of mUS vs. magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in differentiating NMIBC and MIBC at definitive pathological examination. METHODS: This is a prosp… Show more

“…A comparison study of the diagnostic accuracy of mUS vs. MRI in distinguished NMIBC and MIBC at definitive pathological examination. The sensitivity, specificity of mUS and MRI were 85.0% vs. 76.3% and 85.0% vs. 50.0%, respectively [39].…”

“…To overcome these drawbacks of mpMRI, several alternative imaging tools have been proposed. One noteworthy imaging tool is the high-resolution microultrasound imaging proposed for BCa detection and staging 32 , which shows an excellent performance compared to that of mpMRI 33 . However, as high-resolution microultrasound imaging is still limited owing to the lack of equipment availability and expertise necessary, a significant learning curve related to the use of high-resolution microultrasound techniques is required 33 .…”

However, as high-resolution microultrasound imaging is still limited owing to the lack of equipment availability and expertise necessary, a significant learning curve related to the use of high-resolution microultrasound techniques is required 33 . Therefore, we focused on bpMRI, a contrast-free protocol based on the standardized reporting system (VI-RADS), and compared the diagnostic performance between bpMRI and mpMRI.…”

“…The advances in the research of radiological imaging techniques in patients with bladder cancer have made it possible to have more precise and less invasive staging methods, which could lead to better treatment planning with more personalized therapeutic options in selected patients. High-resolution micro-ultrasound (mUS) technology has been introduced very recently and the initial results indicate that mUS may have a better performance than MRI in distinguishing NMIBC from MIBC [ 79 ]. Recently, new hybrid tracers such as indocyanine green (ICG)-99mTc-nanocolloid have been developed, which have also been applied to bladder cancer [ 80 ], although these are very preliminary studies.…”
