Networked music is no longer a future genre: the global quarantine event of 2020 launched the concept of performing together over the Internet into the mainstream. While the demand for performing at a distance may be a new imperative, musicians find themselves faced with technological and performative processes that do not appear to be suitable for performing music together online, due particularly to network latency which disrupts the ability for musicians to synchronize. The research presented in this paper investigates and challenges the reasons why networked music is not readily embraced by musicians and describes how that might change, by way of interviews with practitioners and an in-depth review of the technical constraints. Limitations that might cause frustration are in fact shown to have creative strategies that give rise to aesthetic approaches, distinct to the platform. By exploiting the constraints, in tandem with developing technology designed specifically for remote performance, aesthetic implications arise that not only accommodate the inconveniences of latency and acoustic feedback but can help us adapt and transform how we engage in real-time online, towards a future where we can imagine performing together over even more dramatic distances such as high-latency, low-bandwidth locations outside of urban areas—or even over galactic distances.

This essay investigates the nature and origin of the harmonic structure and canonic voice leading that appears in the closing chorale-like coda of the third piece from György Ligeti's Three Pieces for Two Pianos, 'In zart fliessender Bewegung', from clues found in the sketches. Extrapolating from the coda, and using additional evidence from his sketches, this essay then traces the pitch-structural relationships between the coda and the melodic fragments that emerge from the complex surface texture in the opening of Bewegung. By briefly exploring structural parallels within Ligeti's mature works, this essay suggests how the compositional approach in Bewegung serves as a bridge between his middle and late styles. This essay concludes by considering how musical meaning in Bewegung is intertwined with the intertextual relationships that exist within Ligeti's oeuvre from at least the mid-1960s to the turn of the century.György Ligeti's compositional career was marked by two extended disruptions of creative output. His emigration to the west in 1956 initiated the first interruption, and a prolonged illness coupled with a personal artistic crisis at the end of the 1970s marked the second. The works which emerged after these two periods of relative inactivity are typically characterized by the scholarly community as exhibiting distinct shifts in his compositional style. Esta tese tem por objetivo estudar as obras do compositor György Ligeti dos anos sessenta a través do conceito de gradação. Em termos gerais, as obras desses anos são construídas a partir da harmonia do cluster e da superposição de diferentes estruturas rítmicas. A ideia de gradaçãoé elaborada tomando como base conhecimentos provenientes de diversasáreas tais como a retórica, a literatura, a filosofia, a linguística, as artes visuais e a música. No que diz respeitoà análise das obras de Ligeti estudam-se aspectos como: a superposição de diferentes divisões do tempo, as relações entre ritmo e textura e os vínculos entre gradações superpostas. Obras como Atmosphères e o Quarteto de Cordas n • 2 são estudadas com maior detalhamento em função de conceitos como gradação, continuum e desvio. A partir dos diferentes estudos conclui-se que a ideia de gradação, entendida como uma ordenação que aumenta ou diminui progressivamente em relação a uma qualidade ou propriedade, constitui o fundamento das obras escritas por Ligeti nos anos sessenta. Esta noção funciona tanto no nível do procedimento como do próprio pensamento composicional.
