Growth and Yield Characters of Potato Genotypes Grown in Drought and Irrigated Conditions of Nepal

Abstract: This experiment was conducted to assess the genotypic variation for the growth, yield and yield components of potato grown under drought and irrigated conditions at Hattiban Research Farm, Khumaltar during the summer cropping season (Feb.-May) of the two consecutive years (2013 and 2014). The results revealed that canopy cover, stem height and number of leavers were more sensitive to drought and the effect was more pronounced in early cultivar Desiree. Stem height and leaf number of plant were more (36% and 45… Show more

“…The variation in the marketable yield of potato cultivars may be due to genotypic/varietal factors. Similar results for the variation in marketable yield among cultivars were reported by Khan et al [40], Kumar et al [41] and Luitel et al [44]. Actually, chip-grade tubers (>40 g size) obtained from 'Kufri Chipsona-3' (V 6 ) (76.36%) and 'Kufri Frysona' (V 20 ) (72.37%) showed superiority over other processing-type cultivars, and the farmers may obtain more economic benefits from these processing-type cultivars depending upon the purpose.…”

“…Reduction in plant growth after a period of drought stress is often seen as a negative symptom of stress (Albiski et al 2012;Luitel et al 2015), because the limited proliferation of new leaves associated with reduced stem elongation would infringe on the photosynthetic capacity of the plant (Farooq et al 2009). However, our findings support the hypothesis that stem growth reduction during dehydration may also serve an advantageous purpose for the plants-to reduce transport distance (Koch et al 2004).…”

“…When the drought persists to later stages of the growing season, tubers that are formed towards the end of the growth cycle may hardly be bulked. In this way, drought reduces the marketable fraction of potato tuber yield (Cantore et al 2014;Luitel et al 2015;Nouri et al 2016;Vayda 1994).…”
