“…Attempts to scaffold or build upon children’s emotional development through group instruction, dramatic play, art, biblio‐therapy (reading a book together written to teach a specific concept, such as empathy or sharing), fantasy, and a variety of other elements of preschool have been documented (Bredekamp & Copple, 1997; Saltz, Dixon, & Johnson, 1977; Waliski & Carlson, 2008). Waliski and Carlson (2008) found that intentional intervention during group work was successful in creating changes in children’s internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Numerous other studies have shown that intentional interventions with preschoolers, such as reading a story in a group setting and acting it out in smaller groups through role play, reading times, art, and dramatic play, can increase children’s prosocial behaviors while decreasing negative externalizing behaviors (Benton‐Murray, 1994; Waliski & Carlson, 2008).…”
