Green tea polyphenol extract in vivo attenuates inflammatory features of neutrophils from obese rats

Abstract: In response to a cafeteria diet, we found a decreased chemotaxis, H2O2 release, MPO activity and HOCl production. We also showed a significant immunomodulatory effect of GT on the obese condition recovering some of these factors such H2O2 and HOCl production, also reducing the levels of inflammatory cytokines.

“…Therefore, inhibiting neutrophil infiltration could be beneficial in the initial course of obesity. Recent studies have shown that bilberry extract markedly reduced hepatic neutrophil infiltration in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) [ 22 ] and catechins have been shown to reduce the inflammatory potential of neutrophils in obesity [ 36 ]. We observed that HFD-feeding was associated with a significant elevation in plasma levels of the neutrophil chemoattractant mKC within the first 4 weeks after the dietary switch.…”

“…At a molecular level, EGCG promotes the expression and the activity of several anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory enzymes. EGCG is also proved to counteract the activation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) (Marinovic et al, 2015 ) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) (Albuquerque et al, 2016 ), pathways associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines. In a mouse model of Sjögren syndrome, treatment with EGCG increased the abundance of AQP5 at the apical plasma membrane of the acinar cells.…”
