Green synthesis and biomedicinal applications of silver and gold nanoparticles functionalized with methanolic extract of Mentha longifolia

Abstract: This study deals with facile and rapid synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using Mentha longifolia leaves extracts (MLE). The synthesized AgNPs and AuNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transformed infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of bioactive secondary metabolites, which are involved in the synthesis of nanoparti… Show more

“…Some properties, such as concentration, size, surface charge, and shape, are very important to the antimicrobial effects of AuNPs. In aqueous medium, NPs interact with negatively charged microorganisms to return to their positively charged form, with the effect of electrostatic attraction [ 44 , 45 ].…”

“…The round oval morphology of silver nanoparticles with a mean size of 10.23 ± 2 nm was revealed by TEM. Mentha longifoliabased silver nanoparticles showed tremendous antibacterial effect toward S. aureus (ZOI = 12 ± 0.03 mm), B. subtilis (ZOI = 10 ± 0.01 mm), and K. pneumonia (ZOI = 0) and antioxidant activities [192]. In another research, the biological fabrication of silver nanoparticles was explained by Ocimum Americanum, with a particle size of 48.25 nm.…”

“…In addition, the biosynthesis of AuNPs and AgNPs using the Mentha longifolia extract produces nanoparticles that are able to inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1, COX-2) so that they have painkilling properties as well. These studies proved that AuNPs and AgNPs synthesized using plant extracts are potential alternative agents to treat inflammation [ 73 ].…”
