Green Polymers in Personal Care Products: Rheological Properties of Tamarind Seed Polysaccharide

Abstract: Tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP) is a xyloglucan of vegetable origin, recently proposed for the cosmetic and pharmaceutical market as a “green” alternative to hyaluronic acid. In this study, TSP water dispersions, at different concentrations, were characterized by means of rheological measurements, both in continuous and oscillatory flow conditions. The results were compared with those of hyaluronic acid of two different molecular weights. The results pointed out the close rheological behaviors between TSP a… Show more

“…The seeds are also edible and are normally roasted and consumed as pulses [ 8 ]. Commercially, tamarind seed is used as raw material for production of tamarind seed gum, for use in industries such as food [ 9 ] and medicine, as thickening and stabilizing agent [ 10 , 11 ]. Scientifically, the aqueous seed extracts of T. indica showed potent anti-diabetic and anti-hyperlipidemic activities in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced male rats [ 12 ].…”

“…The tamarind tree is widely used, including its bark, leaves, fruits, seeds and roots, as a pharmaceutical ingredient, food for human and animals, etc (Semenzato et al, 2014). The fruit is its most consumed portion, containing vitamins, tartaric and malic acids, sugars and due to the bittersweet taste, it is used as spice and as an ingredient in food products such as beverages, gravies, hot sauces, and worcestershire's sauce.…”

“…Some of the most widely used polysaccharide as superabsorbents are chitosan, cellulose, starch, alginate, and carrageenan (CG). In personal care products, these polymers are used as thickener and stabilizer or as moisturizing ingredients that can also improve the skin feel of the product …”
