Future themes of mathematics education research: an international survey before and during the pandemic

Before the pandemic (2019), we asked: On what themes should research in mathematics education focus in the coming decade? The 229 responses from 44 countries led to eight themes plus considerations about mathematics education research itself. The themes can be summarized as teaching approaches, goals, relations to practices outside mathematics education, teacher professional development, technology, affect, equity, and assessment. During the pandemic (November 2020), we asked respondents: Has the pandemic changed your view on the themes of mathematics education research for the coming decade? If so, how? Many of the 108 respondents saw the importance of their original themes reinforced (45), specified their initial responses (43), and/or added themes (35) (these categories were not mutually exclusive). Overall, they seemed to agree that the pandemic functions as a magnifying glass on issues that were already known, and several respondents pointed to the need to think ahead on how to organize education when it does not need to be online anymore. We end with a list of research challenges that are informed by the themes and respondents’ reflections on mathematics education research.

The new National Core Curriculum came into force in September 2020 in Hungarian schools. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a deep impact on the final stages of its development. In this paper we have selected two areas for analysis: the fundamental principles of mathematics curriculum and the matriculation exam in mathematics. We propose improvements in both fields, further emphasizing the importance of skills in displaying, understanding and processing information, including visual information obtained as a source or outcome of a problem. We argue that representation, interpretation, and critical evaluation of data and information must be essential parts of the mathematics curriculum. In this context, we also propose a new type of task for the matriculation exam: a complex essay task. The ultimate goal is the development of cross-cutting competencies to support students to become citizens who can make responsible decisions based on the data and knowledge available.

Effective risk communication is essential to manage outbreaks; consequently, news and figures about COVID-19 have become a constant need since the beginning of 2020. In this sense, infographics are a powerful tool for transmitting this type of information. This work analyzes the first year of the pandemic through the infographics published by El País Digitalto evaluate their use in communicating this health crisis. It is through content analysis that the topics and approaches of the articles, the weight of the infographics with respect to the text, the types and subtypes of infographics used, and their degrees and types of interaction, as well as the evolution of these variables throughout of the research period are studied. The results determine that the content typical of the period analyzed is a data-based thematic article, approached from an analytical / interpretive approach. Infographics and text share protagonism, and line graphs without any type of interactivity are included.
