Graphic and haptic simulation system for virtual laparoscopic rectum surgery

Abstract: Our system has been tested by colorectal surgeons who believe that the simulated tactile and visual feedbacks are realistic. It could replace the traditional training process and effectively transfer surgical skills to novices.

“…14 The majority were purely descriptive and only 2 involved VR simulators. 31,32 Only 1 study assessed the effect of LCS training in the OR. 33 It was a randomized controlled trial in which training in LCS on cadavers was the last step of a whole training curriculum involving also a VR CBC in basic skills and cognitive courses.…”

“…If an intersection occurs, the intersection information of the current tetrahedron (triangle) will be updated and the tetrahedron (triangle) will be subdivided. We use the approach in [Steinemann et al 2006] [Pan et al 2011] for the tetrahedral and triangular subdivision. To update the PBD physical model, the processed stretch and volume-preserving constraints shall be removed.…”

“…Several successful VR surgical simulators have been developed [Simbionix ] [Pan et al 2011] [Mao et al 2013] with great success. An essential component of surgical simulators is the technique that supports realistic dissection of soft, deformable tissues in real time.…”

“…More advanced virtual reality (VR) simulator (see Fig. 1) using double haptic devices has been reported in [13]. Challenges have been raised in simulation of the soft tissues with visual deformation and haptic force feedback with good accuracy.…”
