Graphene Polyimide Nanocomposites; Thermal, Mechanical, and High-Temperature Shape Memory Effects

Abstract: Flexible graphene polyimide nanocomposites (0.1-4 wt %) with superior mechanical properties over those of neat polyimide resin have been prepared by solution blending. Imide moieties were grafted to amine-functionalized graphene using a step-by-step condensation and thermal imidization method. The imide-functionalized graphene exhibited excellent compatibility with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The dynamic storage moduli of the graphene polyimide nanocomposites increased linearly with increasing graphene content for… Show more

“…Furthermore, it was found that the modulus increase for SMP composites containing functionalised graphene was 25 to 30% higher than those containing raw graphene (Yoonessi et al, 2012). In addition, the toughness and flexibility were both found to have been improved (Thakur and Karak, 2013).…”

“…For graphene oxide composites, researchers were able to show various electrical and thermal property increases in polymers containing both the reduced and surface-functionalized versions of the material. In 2012, Yoonessi et al showed that polyimide-graphene nanocomposites can increase the modulus (up to a 2.5-fold change with 4 wt% graphene loading) as well as the onset temperature for thermal degradation (up to T d~5 45 C with 8 wt% loading versus T d ¼ 504 C for the unloaded version) [33]. In this same study, the authors also modified the graphene with imide functionalities to study the properties of composites with graphene incorporated into the main chain (Fig.…”

“…Recently, GE has been concerned on the atomic-scale and macro-scale friction behaviors by a lot of scientific researchers. 14,15 There are several main polymer matrix using GE as nanometer packing, including epoxy resin, 16 polyimide (PI), 17 polystyrene (PS), 18 polyurethane (PU), 19 nylon 12, 20 highdensity polyethylene (HDPE), 3 etc. However, to our knowledge, there are few studies about the effect of carbon materials (such as CNTs, GE) on the tribological properties of CF/PTFE composites at high speed.…”
