Grafting Copolymerization of Hydrophilic Monomers Onto Alginate for Modification it's Structure

Abstract: In this research, we synthesize of a graft copolymer based on alginate via simultaneously graft copolymerization acrylamide (AAm) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) onto alginate backbones. The polymerization reaction was carried out in an aqueous medium and in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator. Infrared spectroscopy and TGA thermal analysis were carried out to confirm the chemical structure of the copolymer. A proposed mechanism for hydrogel formation was suggested.

“…At 1022 cm –1 , a band corresponding to CH 2 twisting was also observed. At 871 cm –1 , a band for galactose and mannose appeared. ,, After grafting, the IR spectra of the GH (Figure b) showed additional bands that confirm the successful grafting. The new characteristic band at 3648 cm –1 ,, is due to overlapping of O–H stretching of the O–H group of GG, N–H stretching of the amide group, and −SO 3 H stretching of the grafted AMPS.…”
