Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are instrumental to most economies and leadership offers a means for SMEs to face today's business challenges. Despite the need for effective leadership in SMEs, researchers rarely examine leadership theories in this context. The SME context is characterized by proximal conditions that are conducive to role‐modeling leadership. Role‐modeling leadership, although popular in the practitioner literature, is an underdeveloped concept in the scientific literature because such leadership has been confounded with other leadership theories and behaviors. The present study showcases role‐modeling leadership as a distinct style of leadership and investigates its nomological framework between SMEs and large organizations. Using a sample of 371 employees across the UK, the findings supported (a) leader identification as an antecedent of role‐modeling leadership and (b) a chain of outcomes between role‐modeling leadership, leader–member exchange, job stress, job satisfaction, and turnover intent. However, the moderating effect of organization size was not supported. The present study contributes to theory by unraveling how a novel style of leadership is predicted as well as its relationship with important organizational outcomes. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Strategic role of IT and IT governance mechanisms for the context of small and medium enterprises

The role of small and medium-sized enterprises in the economy is indisputable. However, these companies face great challenges to continue operating. Among them is the use of IT resources and the return on investments made. Using agency theory as a theoretical lens, this article aims to assess the relationship between the strategic use of IT in small and medium-sized companies and the IT governance mechanisms used in the context. From a survey of 68 companies in the service sector, it was possible to identify that relational IT governance mechanisms are more present in the context than structural or procedural mechanisms. It was also possible to identify that information technology, in the context, has a more operational use. Finally, using the Spearman coefficient and the Logistic Regression analyses, it was found that higher strategic levels of IT use led to greater use of governance mechanisms in the three dimensions, structural, procedural, and relational, which corroborates the view that governance is achieved from a mix of formal and informal elements.

Objetivo: Compreender o fenômeno da governança da TI no contexto de PMEs a partir da teoria da agência.Método: Pesquisa qualitativa, descritiva, com levantamento de dados. São utilizadas como visões complementares à visão da agência: a teoria do contrato relacional, tratando dos contratos firmados entre principal e agente, e a teoria da contingência, tratando dos fatores contingentes que influenciam nas escolhas dos mecanismos de governança da TI.Originalidade/Relevância: As pequenas e médias empresas (PMEs) são essenciais para o desenvolvimento econômico e representam importante parcela na geração de empregos. Entretanto, várias são as dificuldades em governar esse tipo de organização, dentre elas os investimentos em Tecnologia da Informação (TI). A governança de TI, como parte da governança corporativa, tem como objetivo direcionar os investimentos nessa área, possibilitando um retorno efetivo. Contudo, os frameworks disponíveis na literatura foram desenvolvidos para o contexto de empresas de grande porte, gerando um vácuo teórico quando se trata de PMEs.Resultados: A partir do framework proposto por Peterson (2004), o presente ensaio teórico propôs um framework que seria mais adequado à realidade da PME.Contribuições teóricas/metodológicas: O framework proposto busca ampliar a compreensão do fenômeno da governança de TI no contexto de PMEs, abrindo caminho para maiores análises teóricas e empíricas do fenômeno.
