Urban areas in semi-arid regions are under chronic water stress. In this scenario, expanding water supply with decentralized sources that collaborate with Water-Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) may be relevant, such as rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems. In this respect, this study aimed to analyze the potential for the use of rainwater in public buildings in the Brazilian semi-arid region, integrating three aspects: environmental and economic feasibility, seasonality, and reliability. The results provide substantial evidence on the benefits of using rainwater, both from an environmental and an economic point of view. This use can significantly reduce the annual consumption of water from the public supply, which would reduce the demand from water bodies. It has also been found that there is considerable variation in the potable water savings potential throughout the year; the systems, however, still provide reliability.

This work evaluates superficial water uses in the Paraíba River considering the São Francisco River Integration Project – PISF. Four system´s operation scenarios were considered: C1- considering the current form of the PISF flow transportation (through the river bed), C2- considering part of the flow being transported by pipelines to the water treatment plant of Gravatá, C3 and C4- considering the aforementioned scenarios with and without the water use restrictions established by the 87-th Joint Resolution of the Agência Nacional de Águas - ANA and Agência Executiva de Gestão de Águas da Paraíba- AESA. A multiobjective optimization model, based on sucessive linear programming, was used when considering the period of time from 2012 to 2017, which was marked by severe drought in the region. The system performance was evaluated through the use of indicators related to the meeting water demands and the efficiency of reservoirs. The water losses in river bed and by evaporation in the reservoirs along the Paraíba River were calculate as well as to estimated the financial cost of these losses. The results show that the scenarios considering pipelines would be more efficient, either regarding to the water demand supply or in minimizing water losses. The limits established by the 87-th Joint Resolution limit the efficiency of water uses of the system, so that the use of water without the limits established by the Resolution does not affect priority water use neither the reservoirs performance.

Assessment of economic impacts in flood events in Lages/SC, Brazil

Flood processes become increasingly harmful to communities due to factors such as climate change and land use. This study aims to evaluate the economic damages of flood events in an area of the urban basins of Lages/SC. Thus, four plans were considered for economic evaluation: one referring to conditions without protective measures and three with the application of elevation of structures at different heights, as well as two scenarios of the evolution of urban occupation. The rainfalls were obtained through the Gumbel probabilistic model to estimate the maximum accumulated precipitations over 5 days, with the hydrological modeling carried out at the HEC-HMS. The hydrodynamic modeling was performed in HEC-RAS through the simulation of a 1D model. The HEC-FDA model was used to perform the risk reduction analysis of damage caused by floods, where the expected annual damages (EAD) were calculated for the four proposed plans as well as for the urban growth scenarios. The results showed that the application of the mitigating measure of raising the structures reduced the EAD by up to 83.10%. As for the scenario of the evolution of urban growth, there was an increase in EAD of 62.09%, in the interval of 20 years. The HEC-FDA model has been demonstrated as good software for assessing the economic damage of floods in different scenarios, showing results that can help decision-makers in the development of public policies.
