Global Rating of Change Scales: A Review of Strengths and Weaknesses and Considerations for Design

Abstract: Most clinicians ask their patients to rate whether their health condition has improved or deteriorated over time and then use this information to guide management decisions. Many studies also use patient-rated change as an outcome measure to determine the efficacy of a particular treatment. Global rating of change (GRC) scales provide a method of obtaining this information in a manner that is quick, flexible, and efficient. As with any outcome measure, however, meaningful interpretation of results can only be … Show more

“…Another limitation is that the patients on extended half-life factor products had been using those products for less time as they have only been available since 2014. The effects detected were small to moderate using Cohen's criteria [42], which makes them likely detectable and important to caregivers [46,47]. With more experience, the caregivers providing care for patients on extended half-life factor products may show larger effects and / or more effects across the HCI subscales.…”

“…The GRCS is a measure of patient perception that asks respondents to rate the change in their symptoms. To minimize ambiguity and ensure valid information, the GRCS was worded as a conditionspecific and construct-specific functional scale that specifically referred to hip OA and physical function, based on the recommendations of Kamper et al 13 The question reads, "Please imagine how you would have described your level of function 9 weeks ago when you entered this trial. How do you rate your overall strength, endurance, and agility in performing activities today as compared to 9 weeks ago as far as your osteoarthritis of the left/right hip is concerned?…”

“…The scores were clustered in two groups: not improved (extremely worsened, much worsened, little worsened, and unchanged) and improved (little improved, much improved, and completely improved). The reliability of the 7-item GPE has been found to be excellent [16]. Additionally, a clinically important change of the PDI was used as an external criterion to test responsiveness in relation to perceived disability.…”
