Global and regional burdens of oral cancer from 1990 to 2017: Results from the global burden of disease study

Abstract: Background Data on the incidence, mortality, and other burden of oral cancer as well as their secular trends are necessary to provide policy‐makers with the information needed to allocate resources appropriately. The purpose of this study was to use the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 results to estimate the incidence, mortality, and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) for oral cancer from 1990 to 2017. Methods We collected detailed data on oral cancer from 1990 to 2017 from the GBD 2017. The global inc… Show more

“…The GBD study provides a tool to quantify health loss from hundreds of diseases, injuries, and risk factors so that health systems can be improved and disparities eliminated [11]. Data from the GBD study have also been widely used to learn the disease burden of cancer [12][13][14][15][16]. In the GBD study framework, the cancer incidence data were retrieved from individual cancer registries or aggregated databases of cancer registry data, such as "Cancer Incidence in Five Continents" (CI5), EUREG, or NORDCAN.…”

“…Cancer is a major public health problem worldwide and is the leading cause of death in the global [ 50 ]. Although there have been new breakthroughs in cancer research in recent years, there are still many challenges that need to be addressed, and the prevention and treatment of cancer need to be further explored continuously.…”

“…Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common head and neck cancer with more than 500,000 newly diagnosed cases every year (Siegel et al, 2020). Globally, both the incidence and the mortality of oral cancer have doubled from 1990 to 2017 (Ren et al., 2020). Clinically, primary surgery is the most effective therapeutic strategy for early‐stage OSCC, while chemotherapy and concurrent chemoradiotherapy are frequently used in patients with advanced OSCC.…”
