Gingival recession and oral health‐related quality of life: a population‐based cross‐sectional study in Brazil

Abstract: OHRQoL is poorer in this adult population in the presence of GR, mainly in upper and anterior teeth. Dentine hypersensitivity and esthetics were found to be factors linking GR to OHRQoL.

“…There is evidence of success for treatment of GR with root coverage procedures (when well indicated), as shown by available systematic reviews 3,7 . However, there has been a lack of attention to PROs, which is not compatible with the extensive literature regarding surgical treatments to reestablish the GM position 25 . To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to report on the effect of four root coverage approaches, including CM and/or EMD, on QoL through treatment of both CDH and esthetics.…”

“…Therefore, the evaluation of oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) can complement normative measures, and a number of assessment tools have been developed with this purpose (Locker & Allen, ). One such assessment tool is the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP‐14; Slade, ), which has been widely used in dentistry (Lima et al., ; Liu, McGrath, & Cheung, ; Wagner et al., ), in different populations including young adults (Maida, Marcus, Spolsky, Wang, & Liu, ; Siluvai et al., ), and already used as instrument for aesthetic matters (Nicolaisen, Bahrami, Schropp, & Isidor, ; Santa‐Rosa et al., ; Silvola et al., ). This measure has been translated to Brazilian Portuguese and validated for use on the Brazilian population (De Oliveira & Nadanovsky, ).…”
