Objective: Objective of the study was to evaluate the level of salivary bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) during the pubertal growth phases in Indonesian children. Methods:The study conducted on 64 boys and 72 girls who were age group of 8-18 years old were randomly selected. Salivary BALP level were estimated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay commercial kits and pubertal growth phase were assessed using cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method according to Baccetti. Mean salivary BALP was compared based on pubertal growth groups by analysis of variance test. Results:Test revealed no significant differences between groups with p=0.312. The highest mean of salivary BALP level was found in the prepeak pubertal growth phase (CVM Stage 1-2), and the lowest one was detected in the postpeak pubertal growth phase (CVM Stage 5-6). Conclusion:The using of salivary BALP as a biomarker for pubertal growth prediction is questionable.

Objective: To evaluate palatal vault change in children and to assess the reliability of two palatal parameters in assessing growth modifications. Subjects and Methods: A group of 26 healthy white children aged 5.3 6 0.3 years (15 boys, 11 girls) were randomly selected. Impressions of the upper dental arches were obtained at baseline and at 12, 18, and 30 months follow-up. Three-dimensional digital images of study casts were obtained using a laser scanning device. Palatal surface area and palatal volume were measured on the digital study casts at each time point. Effect size (ES) coefficients were calculated for both parameters as indices of diagnostic reliability in individual subjects when at least equal to 1.0. Results: Significant increases in palatal surface area and volume were seen over the observation period (P , .001). ES coefficients for palatal surface area were greater than those for palatal volume. However, even for the former parameter, only the value taken at 30 months was above the threshold. Conclusions: Growth of the palatal vault was significant during the observation period, which coincides with primary and mixed dentition stages. Palatal surface area appears to be more reliable than palatal volume in assessment of growth modifications in individual subjects. (Angle Orthod. 2012;82:632-636.)

Introduction:The identification of the onset of the pubertal growth spurt has major clinical implications when dealing with orthodontic treatment in growing subjects.Aim: Through multivariate methods, this study evaluated possible relationships between the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and pubertal growth spurt and dentition phase. Materials and methods:One hundred healthy growing subjects (62 females, 38 males; mean age, 11.5±2.4 years) were enrolled into this doubleblind, prospective, cross-sectional-design study. Phases of skeletal maturation (pre -pubertal, pubertal, post -pubertal) was assessed using the cervical vertebral maturation method. Samples of GCF for the ALP activity determination were collected at the mesial and distal sites of the mandibular central incisors. The phases of the dentition were recorded as intermediate mixed, late mixed, or permanent. A multinomial multiple logistic regression model was used to assess relationships of the enzymatic activity to growth phases and dentition phases.Results: The GCF ALP activity was greater in the pubertal growth phase as compared to the pre -pubertal and post -pubertal growth phases. Significant adjusted odds ratios for the GCF ALP activity for the pre -pubertal and post -pubertal subjects, in relation to the pubertal group, were 0.76 and 0.84, respectively. No significant correlations were seen for the dentition phase. Conclusions:The GCF ALP activity is a valid candidate as a non -invasive biomarker for the identification of the pubertal growth spurt irrespective of the dentition phase.

Abstract: As an adjunct to standard methods based upon radiographic parameters, the GCF ALP may be a candidate as a non-invasive clinical biomarker for the identification of the pubertal growth spurt in periodontally healthy subjects scheduled for orthodontic treatment.
