Giant hair matrix tumor

Abstract: Twelve cases of a peculiar, relatively uncommon, benign but locally invasive tumor occurring in the skin of the scalp and mocha are reported. The neoplasm occurs primarily in elderly women and only exceptionally in men. Its growth is very slow and usually many years elapse before the patient comes under treatment; thus, the tumor may attain a huge size. These deeply invasive neoplasms do not metastasize but may recur if not completely excised. Morphologically, it is an epithelial keratinizing growth clearly sh… Show more

“…The tumour cells in many areas show some degree of nuclear atypia, as well as individual cell keratinization, which at first glance suggests a squamous cell carcinoma. 10,11 The tumour differs from a squamous cell carcinoma by a rather sharp demarcation from the surrounding stroma as well as an abrupt mode of keratinization. 9 Features of malignant tumour include non-scalp locations, size >5 cm, recent rapid increase in size, infiltrative growth pattern on histology, palpable lymph nodes, fixity to deeper structures.…”

“…The size of which ranges from 2 to 15 cm [4]; but also a giant hair matrix tumour is sized 25 cm in largest dimension was reported in the literature [5]. Ordinarily, the lesion is encountered on the scalp; but wrist, elbow, mons pubis, vulva, buttock, and chest are other locations where it can be found.…”

“…Usually located on the scalp, but can also occur on other sites such as the wrist (3), chest (3), elbow (8), vulva (9), mons pubis (10), and buttock (10). The size of the lesion as reported in the literature can vary from 0.4 cm to 10 cms in greatest diameter (4), but can grow as large as 25 cms in largest dimension (11). Ulceration can occur over the lesions, mostly following trauma, and discharge foul smelling, doughy, whitish material.…”

“…The lesion can be present from 4 months to 50 years (2). About 84% of patients are greater than 50 years of age (12), with females involved predominantly (24, 10, 11, 13). Rapid enlargement of the lesion has been reported after trauma or spontaneously (2) and has indicated malignant transformation according to some authors (14).…”
