Giant Esophageal Fibrolipoma

Abstract: Benign esophageal tumors are rare. Reports by most authors refer to a single case found in a routine esophageal examination. 1-3 One third of these lesions are polyps, and myomas are the second most frequent tumor diagnosed. Fibrolipoma has been found in a few and usually becomes large before symptoms occur. Death by regurgitation of this tumor and obstruction of the upper airway has been reported. 4 Other serious problems may occur such as malignant degeneration of the distal end of the tumor, anemia, and mel… Show more

“…Clinical symptom is usually dysphagia and complications are infrequent, however, this pedunculated type of the tumor may became life-threatening due to acute obstruction of the upper airway [8] or because of malignant degeneration of the distal end, possibly attributed to the chronic effect of gastric secretions [9].…”

“…A few cases of pubic fibrolipoma were reported in the literature and all the cases were among HIV (+) patients with lipodystrophia, but none of them exceeded 10 cm in diameter [5]. The fibrolipoma is considered "giant" when reaches a diameter over 10 cm or weight over 1,000 gr [6,7]. Mesenteric, para-pharyngeal, esophageal and intraoral regions were reported as fibrolipoma localizations in the literature [6][7][8].…”
