GHS Implementation to Strengthen Global Chemical Hazard Communication: Will We Ever Get There?

Abstract: The establishment of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) is one of the global initiatives to promote effective chemical hazard communication worldwide. Ultimately, the GHS aims to enhance safe use of chemicals, as well as to facilitate chemical trading across national borders. Countries that are now adopting GHS into their respective national legislations include the EU, US, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia. Nonetheless, challenges exist that might impede GHS impl… Show more

“…The goal is to make it easier not only to trade chemicals across national borders but also to make it more accessible to use chemicals safely. There have been problems with the adoption of different versions of the GHS document, the adoption of other building blocks, the creation of a list of classified chemicals, the impact of the confidential business information on the supply chain, and the definition of GHS implementation all over the world (Ta, 2021). Thus, GHS is gaining popularity, most likely due to the necessity for indepth studies to address the concerns and problems associated with GHS.…”

“…All SDS should follow a standardized format internationally . Challenges in this regard continue to require the input of several stakeholders’ efforts to strengthen global chemical hazard communication . We compared SDS from various sources, such as CAMEO Chemicals, Sigma-Aldrich, NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, PubChem, and OSHA.…”
