“…In this case, H. opuntia is widely distributed throughout the Caribbean and along the Brazilian coast, but the extension of its distribution reported here can cause important changes in the ecological dynamics of this single atoll formation in the south-western Atlantic, for example if these algae start to compete with corals. The sea urchin Tripneustis ventricosus (Lamarck, 1816) recently invaded the atoll probably through ballast water of ships (Soares et al, 2010) and its population has been monitored since then in order to guide proper management when and if necessary. It is alarming that H. opuntia is commonly associated with phase-shifts in the Caribbean (see Hughes, 1994), thus it is critical to understand its ecological dynamics in Rocas Atoll to determine if we are dealing with an invasive species or a natural temporal fluctuation before implementing management and removal actions.…”

“…Furthermore, FNA is inserted in a Marine Protected Area (MPA), with a National Marine Park (PARNAMAR) and an Environmental Protection Area (EPA), which is classified as a UNESCO natural heritage. The RA is also inserted in an MPA, and it is situated at the top of a submarine mountain chain, with its base at 4000 m depth, located 148 km west of the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (Soares et al, 2010).…”

“…Em linhas gerais, pode-se dizer que no Brasil os índices de eficiência da gestão de UCs costeiras e marinhas são em geral medianamente satisfatórios, como verificado na análise RAPPAM realizada com 44UCs marinhas entre os anos 2005-2011 (Ogana et al 2012) (Prates, 2003) e Parque Estadual Marinho da Pedra da Risca do Meio (Lima Filho, 2006;Soares et al 2010).…”
