Acid mine drainage, produced from sulfur-containing mine waste exposed to air, water, and bacteria, is considered as a serious environmental pollutant because of its extremely low pH and excessive heavy metals. In order to solve the ecological environment problems caused by the acid mine drainage, treatment methods such as neutralization, adsorption, passivation, bio-inhibition, and physical coverage have been developed. Nevertheless, these methods are terminal treatment methods, which are unable to prevent the generation of acid mine drainage at the source. Recently, it is noteworthy that the tailing covering technology is particularly emphasized, owing to its superior source control capability. By reducing the contact with air, water, and bacteria, the oxidation of sulfide tailings is significantly reduced, thus avoiding the production of acid mine drainage. To date, massive research has been studied and parts of technologies have been applied, but the review on the principles, processes, and applications of these technologies are still lacking. Thus, the present review aims to increase the knowledge related to the most relevant application of tailing covering technology with the following aspects: (i) the background, concepts, and performance of tailing covering technology; (ii) the applicable conditions for each tailings coverage system and their advantages and limitations; and (iii) the future perspective of this technology.

The use of geopolymers has revolutionized research in the field of construction. Although their carbon footprint is often lower than that of traditional mortars with Portland cement, activators such as sodium silicate have a high environmental impact in the manufacturing of materials. Employing alternative alkali sources to produce geopolymers is necessary to obtain materials with a lower carbon footprint. The present research explores the use of rice husk ash (RHA) as an alternative source of silica to produce alkaline activators by four methods: reflux; high pressure and temperature reaction; thermal bath at 65 °C; and shaking at room temperature. To evaluate the efficiency of these methods, two types of experiments were performed: (a) analysing silica dissolved by the filtering/gravimetric method; and (b) manufacturing mortars to compare the effectiveness of the treatment in mechanical strength terms. The percentages of dissolved silica measured by the gravimetric method gave silica dissolution values of 70–80%. The mortars with the best mechanical strength results were the mixtures prepared with the thermal bath treatment at 65 °C. Mortar cured for 1 day (at 65 °C), prepared with this activator, yielded 45 MPa versus the mortar with commercial reagents (40.1 MPa). It was generally concluded that utilising original or milled RHA in preparing activators has minimal influence on either the percentage of dissolved silica or the mechanical strength development of the mortars with this alternative activator.

Retention of Pollutants Elements from Mine Tailings of Lead in Geopolymers for Construction

The construction sector is one of the most demanding sectors of raw materials in existence today. As a consequence, the extraction of these materials has a significant impact on the environment. At the same time, mining activities produce a series of wastes, in some cases with polluting elements, which must be treated to avoid pollution. Therefore, the use of mining waste for the conformation of new construction materials is an important environmental advantage, even more so when such waste is prevented from producing polluting leachates. Therefore, in this research, geopolymers are developed with mine tailings from the Linares lead mines, chemically activated with potassium hydroxide. For this purpose, different percentages of the alkaline activator were tested and the physical and mechanical properties of the conformed materials were evaluated. The analysis of the different conformed geopolymers determined the optimum percentage of potassium hydroxide for conforming the geopolymer with the best mechanical and physical properties. In addition, the concentration in the leachate of potentially contaminating chemical elements in the mining waste was estimated to be lower than those regulated by the regulations. Consequently, this research shows the development of a sustainable material for construction with mining waste and reduction of the environmental impact of traditional products.
