Geochemistry of core sediments from Mullipallam creek, South East coast of India

Abstract: The Mullipallam creek in Muthupet mangroves region is the only E-W trending coastal strip in the SE coast of India and is very important, as the mangrove acts as a barrier to natural diasters. Natural, anthropogenic signals and accumulation of elements were made by collecting sediment samples at various depths in a core. All sediments were analyzed for carbonates (CaCO 3 ), organic carbon (OC), major (Si, Al, Fe, Na, K, Ca, Mg, P), and trace (Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Zn). Normalization with Al values has been d… Show more

“…The Mn shows an increasing trend from 20 to 12 cm depth, with the highest concentration at 12 cm depth. Above this Mn decreases drastically up to 8 cm followed by a gradual decrease up to (Sundararajan and Natesan 2010). Further, a similar point-to-point variation of Fe and Mn is observed between 56 and 52 cm in the lower section, 30-24 cm in the middle section and 14 cm to the surface in the upper section of the core.…”

“…The classification suggests that the muddy sand sediments observed in many stations were due to the poor wave action and shallow regions in the area [53]. The high value of Fe (62,413 mg kg −1 ) was observed due to the convergence of ephemeral streams and the presence of rich mangrove ecosystems along the southern part of the study area at station 1 [54]. The red inorganic pigment used for painting boats is based on iron (III) oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ).…”

“…Calcium carbonate from the shelf sediments are often derived as carbonate materials and particulate matter from adjacent landmass and through inorganic and organic precipitation from the water column (Sundararajan and Natesan, 2010a). The major sources of carbonate in the sediments from the continental shelf are mainly from the shell fragments of organisms, and dilution of biogenic calcite by detritus in the sediments (Sundararajan and Natesan, 2010a, b).…”

“…Sediments from the continental shelf zones along the East coast of India have been studied only for their depositional processes (Sundararajan and Natesan, 2010a;Satpathy et al, 2011). Continental shelf sediments serve as an ultimate sink for metals discharged into the aquatic environment (Luoma and Bryan, 1981;Hornberger et al, 1999).…”
