The objective of this study was to investigate the frequency of occurrence and variety of intestinal parasites among free-living wild animals. Fecal samples from wild mammals and birds at rehabilitation centers in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo were analyzed by sedimentation and flotation-centrifugation methods. Parasite eggs, oocysts, cysts and/or trophozoites were found in 71% of the samples. Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts were detected in fecal samples from oncillas (Leopardus tigrinus) and scaly-headed parrots (Pionus maximiliani). Giardia cysts were identified in the feces of a gray brocket (Mazama gouazoubira). Among the most common parasites found, there were eggs from Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina and Ancylostoma tubaeforme, and from Cestoda. Several Enterobius sp. eggs were found in the feces of red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus). It can be concluded from this study that despite the small number of samples, the diversity of parasites found was noteworthy. Additional information about parasite endofauna in wild animals is needed, since their presence might suggest that there could be proximity to and interactions with domestic animals and/or humans. In addition, further studies on parasites from free-living wild animals are of prime importance for understanding the intensity of anthropic changes in wild environments.

Lactoferrin (Lf) is an iron-chelating glycoprotein present in milk and mucosal secretions, a component of the mammalian innate immune system. Lf is microbiostatic and microbicidal. Lf can reduce the bacterial expression of virulence factors, such as those involved in biofilm production and protease secretion. The high identity among mammalian Lf sequences facilitates its use in human and veterinary medicine. Lf of bovine origin is the principal Lf used due to its commercial availability through purification from milk whey; recombinant Lfs (bovine, human, and porcine) have been used as well. Lf is a stable protein that retains its physicochemical characteristics under gastric pH conditions, and in most cases it is bioactive even after digestion; thus, the incorporation of Lf into diets facilitates its administration to animals. The aim of this review is to examine original research in which the effects of bovine and porcine Lf on pathogens of domestic animals have been demonstrated through in vitro and in vivo assays, with the purpose of ascertaining the benefits that Lf provides in the treatment of infectious diseases.

ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to perform the first molecular genotyping of Giardia duodenalis from goats in Brazil, in order to assess the risk for zoonotic transmission. Samples were collected from two dairy goat farms (Saanen breed) located in the city of Niteroi in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Goat faecal samples (n = 58) were collected directly from the rectums of all animals up to one year of age and were subjected to centrifuge-flotation in sugar saturate solution. Nested-PCR and sequencing using β-giardin and tpi gene targets was performed on positive samples. Seventeen out of fifty-eight (29.31%) faecal samples were positive for Giardia duodenalis cysts, all belonging to the same farm. Only eight isolates were successfully sequenced (eight samples for β-giardin and four samples for tpi), all belonging to genotype E. Two types of sequences were identified for each locus within isolates from the current study, which exhibited sequence heterogeneity with variable numbers of single nucleotide polymorphisms. The present study contributes to a better understanding of the molecular epidemiology of this parasite.
