First molecular characterisation of Giardia duodenalis infection in dairy goats in Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to perform the first molecular genotyping of Giardia duodenalis from goats in Brazil, in order to assess the risk for zoonotic transmission. Samples were collected from two dairy goat farms (Saanen breed) located in the city of Niteroi in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Goat faecal samples (n = 58) were collected directly from the rectums of all animals up to one year of age and were subjected to centrifuge-flotation in sugar saturate solution. Nested-PCR and sequencing … Show more

“…The presence of G . duodenalis is rarely analyzed in goats, but in two recent studies in Brazil, prevalence of the parasite ranged between 22.6% and 29.3% and the dominant genotype was genetic assemblage E [ 56 , 57 ]. A similar scenario is observed for studies with sheep.…”

“…Há poucos relatos da presença de Giardia sp. em caprinos, mas dois estudos brasileiros [49,56] recentemente destacaram a prevalência deste protozoário entre 22,6% a 29,3% [15,21,57]. Um cenário similar foi observado em estudos com ovinos.…”

“…Thus, the current study results are suggesting that goats could be a possible reservoir of zoonotic infection. In Brazil, due to goats small farms and most its workers live inside or near the farm, thus, the close contact with infected animals could be a risk for zoonotic G. spread (57) . The current study revealed it occurrence in cattle, sheep and goat.…”
