Genotoxicity of Thermopsis turcica on Allium cepa L. roots revealed by alkaline comet and random amplified polymorphic DNA assays

Abstract: This study was undertaken to evaluate genotoxic potential of Thermopsis turcica aqueous extracts on the roots of onion bulb (Allium cepa L.) by comet assay and random amplified polymorphic DNA technique. The Allium root growth inhibition test indicated that the EC 50 and 29EC 50 values were 8 and 16 mg/ml concentrations of T. turcica aqueous extracts, respectively. The negative control (distilled water), positive control (methyl methane sulfonate, 10 mg/l) and 8 and 16 mg/ml concentrations of T. turcica extrac… Show more

“…These results indicated that Sargassum dentifolium is more genetically affected by stress condition than D. dichotoma and can be used as a bioindicator. Changes in bands may be the consequences of genomic template instability (GTS) related to the level of DNA damage, the efficiency of DNA repair and replication (Atienzar et al, 2002;Atienzar andJha, 2004 andCiğerci et al, 2016). Yu et al (2013) reported that high genetic variability and differentiation existed among Sargassum horneri populations using ISSR and RAPD.…”

“…Therefore, it is essential to estimate the impact of iron NPs on plant genotoxicity. The randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique has been efficiently used to evaluate mutagenic effects of NPs on various plant species [6][7][8].…”

“…these results are consistent with earlier studies. Ciğerci et al (2016) showed that GTS % values was significantly decreased in onion bulbs treated with Thermopsis turcica extract for 24h. Changes in bands may be the consequences of genomic template instability, Egypt.…”
