Genome-Wide Characterization and Expression Analysis of the Germin-Like Protein Family in Rice and Arabidopsis

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that germin-like proteins (GLPs) are present ubiquitously in rice and Arabidopsis. However, the understanding regarding their role in development and abiotic/biotic stress resistance remains limited. In the present study, we report genome-wide identification, characterisation, subcellular localization, enzyme activity, and expression analysis of the GLP gene family in rice and Arabidopsis to study their functions. In total, 43 and 32 GLPs in the rice and Arabidopsis genome were iden… Show more

“…Oxalate oxidase activity has been identified mainly in monocot plant species including wheat, barley, and rice (Svedruzic et al, 2005). Interestingly, germin-like proteins (GLPs) in Arabidopsis, which are homologous to oxalate oxidase, showed neither oxalate oxidase activity nor a Mndependent activation (Membré et al, 2000;Li et al, 2016). Intriguingly, the Mn 2+ cation itself may act as an antioxidant molecule.…”

“…From the plant host perspective, chitinases and GLPs were among the top 20 proteins identified by PLS-DA as the best at differentiating infected from mock-inoculated samples. An increased abundance of germin-like proteins (GLPs) in WB could be contributing to increased basal defense mechanisms, which are conserved in many plants and involve enzymatic activities like superoxide dismutase (SOD), oxalate oxidase, and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) [ 42 ]. Our results show that the host responses detected in WB are conserved in other Xanthomonas pathosystems, in which chitinases and GLPs in tolerant rice seedlings are prominent features.…”

“…For instance, the members of two blocks of GLPs on chromosome 4 are independently sorted in tandem (Table 1 ). Importantly, tandem duplications appear to play an important role in expansion of the GLP family in rice and Arabidopsis [ 57 ]. It is known that GLPs can function as a cofactor for reinforcement of the cell wall through the production of H 2 O 2 due to their SOD activity (e.g.…”
