Genital Human Papillomavirus Infection in Women Who Have Sex with Women

Abstract: Genital infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), as determined by polymerase chain reaction detection of HPV DNA and prevalence of HPV-6 and -16 serum antibodies, was investigated in 149 women who were sexually active with women. By use of HPV L1 consensus primers and hybridization to types 6/11, 16, 18, 31/33/35/39, and 45 and a generic probe, HPV DNA was detected in 30% of subjects; of these, 20% had type 31/33/35/39, 18% had type 16, and 2% had type 6/11. Of 21 subjects reporting no prior sex with men, HP… Show more

“…Published studies have refuted this belief and clearly demonstrate presence of the spectrum of cervical cytology atypias in WSW, including women with no history of male partners. [19][20][21][22] We demonstrated that WSW have a similar prevalence of cervical atypias to women with no history of sex with women, confirming Marrazzo et al's study in the USA. 19 Very few of the women in the study were HIV positive, and there was no significant difference between WSW and controls.…”

“…In addition, perinatal transmission is a rare occurrence. 5 A suppressed immune system leaves the body more susceptible to all microorganisms in the infected patients. In fact, the risk for genital HPV infection is higher among people infected with HIV because having one STI increases the risk of contracting others.…”

“…The prevention of cervical cancer via the HPV route is based on early detection. The sooner a woman learns of having contracted HPV and takes action, the better the outcome of treatment [3]. In developing countries, cervical cancer continues to be the prime cause of cancer-related deaths in women [4].…”
