Genetic diversity and variation of Chinese fir from Fujian province and Taiwan, China, based on ISSR markers

Abstract: Genetic diversity and variation among 11 populations of Chinese fir from Fujian province and Taiwan were assessed using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers to reveal the evolutionary relationship in their distribution range in this report. Analysis of genetic parameters of the different populations showed that populations in Fujian province exhibited a greater level of genetic diversity than did the populations in Taiwan. Compared to Taiwan populations, significant limited gene flow were observed among… Show more

“…In the same concern Žiarovská et al 30 indicated that the different ISSR fingerprint patterns of the amaranth mutant lines when compared to the Ficha cultivar and K-433 hybrid, ISSR specific profiles may be part of a consequence of the complex response of the intergenic space of mutant lines to the gamma-radiance. Genetic analysis using ISSR of the different populations of Chinese fir in Fujian province exhibited a greater level of genetic diversity than that generated from the populations in Taiwan 31 . Polylocus ISSR-PCR markers can be used for characterizing gene pools and for molecular genetics identification of populations and breeds, including starlet populations and replacement brood stocks 32 .…”

“…Although the reduced accuracy of estimation of genetic diversity using dominant markers was reported, it has been well documented that ISSR is a reliable technique for detecting DNA polymorphisms and assessing genetic diversity of many woody plant species [16][17][18]. Even though no ISSR analysis study has been carried out on K. latifolia, numerous similar researches have been conducted on other two genera, Rhododendron and Vaccinium, in Ericaceae.…”

“…Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb) Hook) is one of the major commercial conifer species in China [1,2]. It is a typical subtropical coniferous tree in Southern China [3,4]. Chinese fir is the most important valued timber species due to its fast growth, high yield, and excellent wood quality (i.e., straight and decay resistant) as well as having significant cultural and historical values to the people [3].…”

“…Since the 1980s, decreasing production of Chinese fir plantations has been reported, primarily due to soil degradation [7,8]. Currently, the sustainability of Chinese fir plantations is threatened by biodiversity reduction, production loss, soil degradation, and a lack of self-regeneration [4,9]. Therefore, understanding the factors that control regeneration, systematic breeding and selection of the best potential trees for future breeding programs are a major research priority for this tree.…”
