Gastric Parietal Cell and Other Autoantibodies in the BB Rat

Abstract: A longitudinal study of circulating autoantibodies in the sera of 48 BB rats was performed by indirect immunofluorescence. No pancreatic islet cell, adrenocortical, or thyroid microsomal autoantibodies were found. However, autoantibodies reactive to gastric parietal cells (PCA), smooth muscle, and thyroid colloidal antigens were identified, PCA were not detected in Wistar-Furth or BB x Wistar-Furth F1 hybrid rats. The range of ages at the time of first appearance of PCA was the same as that of onset of insulin… Show more

“…In the spontaneously diabetic BB rat, we have also demonstrated similarly that gastric parietal cell autoantibodies were detectable before or near the age of onset of diabetes with little increase in the frequency of gastric parietal cell autoantibodies thereafter [15]. These results raise the possibility that both Type I diabetes and other associated autoimmune diseases result from a common process.…”

“…Elder et al [15] reported that the BB rat does not have pancreatic cell auto-antibodies. Tingle and Nakhooda (cited by Dyrberg et al) [161 have been unable to demonstrate islet cell cytoplasmic antibodies by immunofluorescence on frozen sections of rat pancreas.…”

“…Like the increased prevalence of thyroid auto-immunity in patients with IDDM (Gray et al, 1980), in some instances, lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT) was also found in BB/W rat (Sternthal et al, 1981). Moreover many organ specific antibodies, such as islet cell surface antibody (ICSA), gastric parietal cell antibody (PCA), smooth muscle antibody (SMA) and thyroidal colloid antibody (TCA) have been also found in BB/W rat (Dyrberg et al, 1982;Elder et al, 1982;. Therefore it was suggested that BB/W rat represents a new model of multiple autoimmune endocrinopathy (Sternthal et al, 1981).…”
