Gastric Electrical Stimulation with the TANTALUS® System in Obese Type 2 Diabetes Patients: Effect on Weight and Glycemic Control

Abstract: Short-term therapy with the TANTALUS System improves glucose control, induces weight loss, and improves blood pressure and lipids in obese T2DM subjects on oral antidiabetes therapy.

“…107 In addition, laparoscopic procedures to place novel electronic gastric 108,109 or gastroduodenal motility stimulators 110 and vagal nerve blocking 111 devices are also under investigation. These are considered less invasive than most conventional bariatric surgical procedures; however, some early promising results have been followed by disappointing data from randomized controlled trials.…”

“…W badaniach wykazano, że spadek stężenia HbA 1c jest, przynajmniej częściowo, niezależny od redukcji masy ciała [21,22]. Można zatem przypuszczać, że poprawa kontroli glikemii pod wpływem GCM istotnie zależy nie tylko od ograniczonego spożycia kalorii.…”

“…It was found that the decline in HbA 1c levels is at least partly independent of loss of body weight [21,22]. Hence, it may be speculated that beneficial effects on glucose control are not only associated with the reduced caloric intake because a tendency toward lower ghrelin levels during GCM was found [20], also, as another study demonstrated that this therapy significantly reduced hunger scores in obese (diabetic and nondiabetic) subjects [19], the influence of gastrointestinal hormones on the effects of the implanted system on insulin sensitivity and beta-cell function is possible.…”

“…In real labs, more accurate results extracted from the electrophysiological measurements need the development of different hardware or software tools in order to send proper tests, without noise or pseudo-signals, to a medical center, (Babarada, 2010a). On the other hand, this chapter has the following additional scopes: (i) it offers an alternative circuit for the noise rejection in electromyography and (ii) it represent a starting platform for new others electrophysiological signals recording, starting from cellular origin of the electrical biosignals (Sanmiguel, 2009) and the products can be easily used for learning in bioelectronics platforms, too (C. Ravariu, 2009b).…”
