Gastric blood flow in anaesthetized cats

Abstract: SU-MMARY 1. The gastric mucosal blood flow has been measured by the amidopyrine clearance technique in anaesthetized cats. The total gastric blood flow has been (a) measured directly and (b) calculated by the Fick principle from the amidopyrine concentrations in gastric arterial and venous blood and the gastric output of amidopyrine.2. Observations on the recovery of added amidopyrine from arterial and venous blood and plasma, and on the rate of transfer of amidopyrine from corpuscles to plasma, support the un… Show more

“…Swan have shown a marked rise in mucosal blood flow associaated with acid secretion stimulated by insulin and 2-deoxy-D-glucose. A parallel rise in mucosal blood flow and gastric acid secretion has been shown when acid secretion is stimulated with histamine Moody, 1967;Harper et al 1968) or gastrin Harper et al 1968;Cowley et al 1969).…”

“…a direct antisecretory effect, this would reduce mucosal blood flow, assuming mucosal blood flow to be controlled by acid secretion. However, it has been shown (Harper et al 1968) that under certain conditions an increase in mucosal blood flow potentiates acid secretion. Therefore, if a rise in central B.P.…”

“…The abdomen was opened by a mid-line incision and the pylorus occluded with a tape ligature. The hepatic artery was cannulated retrogradely on the right side of the stomach as described by Harper, Reed & Smy (1968), and the splenic vessels were tied close to the spleen. By this route [14C]histamine solution in saline was given directly into the arterial supply to the stomach, via the coeliac axis.…”
