Walker, AJ, McFadden, BA, Sanders, DJ, Rabideau, MM, Hofacker, ML, and Arent, SM. Biomarker response to a competitive season in Division I female soccer players. J Strength Cond Res 33(10): 2622–2628, 2019—The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of training load (TL) on performance and biomarkers of health, performance, and recovery in Division I female soccer players throughout a competitive season. Subjects (N = 25, Mage = 20 ± 1.1 years) were monitored before the start of preseason and every 4-weeks thereafter (T1–T5). A battery of performance tests was administered before the start of preseason (P1) and end-of-season (P2), including body composition (percent body fat [%BF], fat free mass [FFM], and fat mass), vertical jump (VJ), and Vo 2max. Blood draws were conducted at every time point (T1–T5) to assess free and total cortisol (CORTF and CORTT), prolactin (PRL), T3, IL-6, creatine kinase (CK), sex-hormone binding globulin, omega-3 (n-3FA), vitamin-D (Vit-D), iron (Fe), hematocrit (HcT), ferritin (Fer), percent saturation (%Sat), and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC). Daily exercise energy expenditure (EEE) and TL were determined. There were significant declines in Vo 2max, VJ, weight, and %BF from P1–P2 (p < 0.05) with no significant differences in FFM. Training load and EEE significantly decreased from T1–T3 (p < 0.05). Significant increases were seen in CORTT, CORTF, PRL, T3, IL-6, CK, and TIBC throughout the season (p < 0.05). Significant decreases were seen in n-3FA, Fe, Fer, %Sat, and Hct throughout the season (p < 0.05). Female athletes experience significant physiological changes following high TL and EEE associated with preseason and appear to be further exacerbated by the cumulative effects of the season. Unique insights provided by biomarkers enable athletes and coaches to be cognizant of the physiological changes that are occurring throughout the season.
McFadden, BA, Walker, AJ, Bozzini, BN, Sanders, DJ, and Arent, SM. Comparison of internal and external training loads in male and female collegiate soccer players during practices vs. games. J Strength Cond Res 34(4): 969–974, 2020—The purpose of this study was to compare the internal and external training loads (TLs) in men and women throughout a Division I soccer season during practices versus games. Players were evaluated during all practices and regulation game play using the Polar TeamPro system, utilizing Global Positioning Satellite technology and heart rate (HR) monitoring to determine TL, time spent in HR zones expressed as a percent of HRmax (HRZ1–Z5), calories expended per kilogram body mass (Kcal·kg−1), distance covered (DIS), sprints, average speed (SPDAVG), and distance covered in speed zones (DISZ1–Z5). During games, no significant differences were seen between men and women for TL, Kcal·kg−1, HRZ1–Z5, SPDAVG, DIS, DISZ1, DISZ3, and DISZ4. However, men accumulated a significantly greater number of sprints and DISZ5 (p < 0.05) during games, whereas women accumulated a greater DISZ2 (p < 0.05). During practice, no differences were observed for TL, DIS, sprints, Kcal·kg−1, DISZ2, DISZ3, HRZ1–Z5, but men exhibited higher SPDAVG, (p < 0.05), DISZ1 (p < 0.05), DISZ4 (p < 0.05), and DISZ5 (p < 0.05). The parallels in Kcal·kg−1, total DIS, HR, and TL indicate a similar relative workload between men and women. However, distance covered in higher speed zones was found to be greater in men than women across practice and games likely reflecting inherent sex differences in the ability to achieve those speeds. Monitoring techniques that track relative player workloads throughout practices and games may enhance player health and performance during the season. An individualized approach to tracking high-intensity running may improve workload prescriptions on a per player basis.
Background: Minimally invasive oesophagectomy (MIO; thoracoscopy, laparoscopy, cervical anastomosis) is a complex procedure and few substantial series have been published. This study documented the morbidity, mortality and challenges of adopting MIO in a specialist unit in the UK. Conclusion: MIO can be performed with acceptable mortality and morbidity rates in an unselected series of patients. There was more morbidity related to gastric tube ischaemia than was expected.
Background Theacrine (1,3,7,9-tetramethyluric-acid) is a pure alkaloid with a similar structure to caffeine and acts comparably as an adenosine receptor antagonist. Early studies have shown non-habituating effects, including increases in energy and focus in response to Teacrine®, the compound containing pure theacrine. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the effects of Teacrine® and caffeine on cognitive performance and time-to-exhaustion during a simulated soccer game in high-level male and female athletes. Methods Male and female soccer players ( N = 24; M Age = 20.96 ± 2.05y, M MaleVO2max = 55.31 ± 3.39 mL/O 2 /kg, M FemaleVO2max = 50.97 ± 3.90 mL/O 2 /kg) completed a 90-min simulated treadmill soccer match over four randomized sessions (TeaCrine®, caffeine, TeaCrine® + caffeine, placebo). Cognitive testing at halftime and end-of-game including simple reaction time (SRT), choice RT (CRT), and cognitive-load RT with distraction questions (COGRT/COGRT Wrong ) was performed, with a run time-to-exhaustion (TTE) at 85% VO 2max following end-of-game cognitive testing. Session times and pre-exercise nutrition were controlled. RM-MANOVAs with univariate follow-ups were conducted and significance was set at P < 0.05. Results TTE trended towards significance in TeaCrine® and TeaCrine® + caffeine conditions compared to placebo ( P < 0.052). A condition main effect ( P < 0.05) occurred with faster CRT in caffeine and TeaCrine® + caffeine compared to placebo. COGRT Wrong showed a significant time main effect, with better accuracy at end-of-game compared to halftime ( P < 0.05). A time x condition interaction in SRT ( P < 0.05) showed placebo improved from halftime to end-of-game. Conclusions The 27–38% improvements in TTE reflect increased performance capacity that may have important implications for overtime scenarios. These findings suggest TeaCrine® favorably impacts endurance and the combination with caffeine provides greater benefits on cognitive function than either supplement independently.
To develop a model for recurrent anterior glottic stenosis and to test the efficacy of topical mitomycin-C in preventing restenosis, we induced anterior glottic stenosis with a CO2 laser in 5 dogs. In 3 dogs, recurrence was established after surgical lysis. Subsequently, the 3 dogs received a single topical 3-minute treatment with a 1% solution of mitomycin-C after a second surgical lysis. In a parallel experiment, the other 2 dogs received a single topical 3-minute treatment with a 1% solution of mitomycin-C after the initial surgical lysis. An anterior glottic web was induced in all 5 dogs with the CO2 laser. The 3 dogs experienced restenosis at the anterior glottis after surgical lysis alone. Mitomycin-C prevented anterior glottic restenosis in 2 of the 3 dogs treated twice and in both of the dogs treated once (p = .02). We conclude that a recurrent stenosis of the anterior glottis may be induced reproducibly in the canine model with the CO2 laser. Application of topical mitomycin-C after lysis of an anterior glottic stenosis produces a statistically significant reduction in the rate of restenosis as compared to surgical lysis alone.
The behaviour of decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) in river water was evaluated by measuring concentration changes in open beakers. Effective values for the partition coefficient between organic carbon and water (K(OC)) were derived by least-squares optimisation of a dynamic model which accounted for partitioning between the sorbed and dissolved phases of D5, and for losses via volatilisation and hydrolysis. Partial mass transfer coefficients for volatilisation were derived from model fits to controls containing deionised water. Effective values of log (K(OC)) were between 5.8 and 6.33 (mean 6.16). These figures are higher than some other experimentally-derived values but much lower than those estimated from the octanol: water partition coefficient using single-parameter linear free energy relationships (LFERs). A poly-parameter LFER gave a predicted log (K(OC)) of 5.5. Differences in partitioning are believed to be due to the nature of the organic matter present. The new value for effective K(OC) was employed in a simple model of D5 behaviour in rivers to ascertain the extent to which a higher affinity for organic carbon would depress volatility. The results suggest that despite the revised K(OC) value, volatilisation of D5 remains a significant removal mechanism in surface waters.
