Functional Annotation and Classification of the Hypothetical Proteins of Neisseria meningitides H44/76

Abstract: Abstract:Neisseria meningitidis is a parasitic gram-negative bacterium of the family Neisseriaceae (Proteobacteria) and it causes many human diseases including meningitidis and septicemia. One of its strains, H44/76, has natural transformation capacity, thus it is important to identify possible novel drug targets and to develop serogroup B vaccines against this opportunist pathogen. In the complete genome of N. meningitidis strain H44/76, there are 1961 coding genes out of which 544 encodes for hypothetical pr… Show more

“…These molecules are labeled as hypothetical proteins (HP). 2 , 20 , 21 Nearly 30% to 40% genes of most bacterial genomes are classified as unknown or hypothetical. 22 These HPs are the translated nucleic acid sequences based on sequence similarity, but their biochemical and functional characterization evaluation is necessary for the experimental existence.…”

“…Most of these hypothetical proteins are expected to play essential roles and their annotation can unveil novel functional pathways. The utilisation of in silico approaches to predict annotations of HPs has been successful in numerous bacterial species ( Singh et al, 2015 ; Varma et al, 2015 ; Prabhu et al, 2020 ). Additionally, there are still several challenges in annotating such proteins, given the scanty organelle information known and the pervasive nature of the subcellular location of these proteins.…”
