FRUIT AND SEED MORFOMETRY, SEED GERMINATION AND SEEDLING VIGOR of Parkia gigantocarpa

Abstract: The objectives of this work were to characterize fruits and seeds and evaluate seed germination and seedling vigor from fifteen parent plants of Parkia gigantocarpa Ducke. The fresh weight, length, width, and thickness of fruits and seeds were determined. The germination was tested in a sand substrate, with four replications of 25 seeds per treatment (parent plants). The number of days for emergence, emergence percentage, emergence speed index, germination percentage, and seedling dry weight were evaluated. Th… Show more

“…The biometric characteristics of seeds and fruits have diagnostic values in differentiating forest species (PEREIRA, FERREIRA, 2017;DUARTE, GONZALEZ-RONDAN, ROCHA, 2019;BARROS, CRUZ, PEREIRA, SILVA, 2020), as shown in the present study in the differentiation of species of the same genus as well as those of different botanical families. Compared to the traditional measurement methods, such as measurements with a digital caliper, seed image analysis is a more effective and precise method for the characterization of forest species.…”

“…Novel findings regarding the seed dispersal ecology of Parkia platycephala Benth. [12] and seed germination of Parkia gigantocarpa Ducke [13] also emphasize genus role in forest regeneration and biodiversity maintenance. Recent studies have delved into P. platycephala pollination ecology, highlighting the intricate web of interactions between the plant and its specific pollinators [12].…”

“…Biometric variations in seeds are influenced by fruit, which are affected by environmental factors such as differences in pollination among inflorescences, strategy in nutrient use, and available water resources. As well as the genotypic diversity of populations, which can result in different phenotypic characteristics, the effect of the environment on seed development is mainly expressed by variations in size, in weight, and in physiological and health potential (BARROS et al, 2020;CORREIA et al, 2019).…”
