-(Fruit and seed biometry and germination of jatoba-curuba (Hymenaea intermedia Ducke, Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), Hymenaea intermedia Ducke is a tree species of great load, found in forest areas in the states of Pará and Amazonas, Brazil. The objective of this work was to study the biometrical characteristics of fruits and seeds of H. intermedia and the effect of scarification on seed germination. It was measured the length, width and thickness of the fruits and seeds and the number of seeds per fruit. For control and scarified seeds it was measured the percentages and mean time germination and abnormal seedlings and percentage of dead seeds. The seeds scarification was accomplished with an electric emery, in the basal part of the seed. The sowing was done on a substrate of sand and sawdust (1:1), in four replications of 50 seeds, in a complete randomized design. Length, width and thickness of fruits ranged from 26.3 to 54.8 mm, 19.1 to 43.8 mm and 17.7 to 29.6 mm, respectively. The fruits had from one to three seeds, the percentage of damaged seeds by insects (4.1%) was low. Length, width and thickness of seeds ranged from 18.7 to 27.4 mm, 12.2 to 16.1 mm and 10.9 to 15.6 mm, respectively. Statistical difference (p ≤ 0.05) between treatments was detected just for mean germination time. Scarified and control seeds had mean germination time of 18.9 and 68.6 days, germination percentages were 96.0% and 95.5%, obtained at the 25 th and 418 th days, respectively. As H. intermedia seeds have impermeable tegument to water, mechanical scarification is an efficient method of breaking seed dormancy in this species. Selection of morpho-agronomic descriptors for cupuaçuzeiro germplasm characterizationAbstract -The objective of this work was to select morphological and agronomic quantitative descriptors to characterize accessions of cupuaçuzeiro [Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex Spreng.) Schum]. Fifty three descriptors were evaluated, including 14 from leaves, 18 from flowers, 16 from fruits, and 5 agronomic traits. To discard redundant or non-discriminating descriptors, a two step multivariate analysis of principal components was applied. The first phase included the selection of descriptors within each group of characteristics individually (leaf; flower; fruit; agronomic). Based on the descriptors selected in this first phase, a joined analysis of principal components for the final selection was done. Three criteria for variable exclusion were adopted. Thirty four descriptors were excluded, representing a reduction of 64%. A minimal list of descriptors for cupuaçuzeiro was proposed, including leaf length, leaf thickness, leaf apex width, leaf base vein angle, flower bud length, flower peduncle length, flower peduncle diameter, ovary girth, number of ovules, flower petal lamina length, staminode length, seed width, flat seeds, acidity, brix, pH, number of fallen flowers buds, number of abscised immature pods and number of witches-brooms.
HEALTH QUALITY AND GERMINATION OF Pterogyne nitens SEEDSABSTRACT -Pterogyne nitens Tull. (Leguminosae -Caesalpinioideae), wood species native to the Atlantic Rain Forest, is constantly used to extract timber. With the need to amplify the cultivation surface for trade, the interest in information about the quality and conservation of its seeds has increased. In spite of the great economic importance of this species, studies about the health quality of seeds are inexistent, mainly for native species. This paper aims to identify the occurence of pathogens associated in Pterogyne nitens seeds. The fungi were studied in a blotter test with and without freezing and symptoms in seedlings. The following fungi were found in seeds: Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., Fusarium moniliforme, Alternaria alternata, Rhizopus sp., Cladosporium sp. and Phoma sp. The largest occurence found was the fungi Aspergillus and Penicillium. The blotter test with freezing made it possible to identify two species of the potentially pathogenic Fusarium moniliforme and Alternaria alternata. Symptoms in seedlings were not detected.
-Seed dormancy is a frequent phenomenon in tropical species, causing slow and non-uniform germination. To overcome this, treatments such as scarification on abrasive surface and hot water are efficient. The objective of this study was to quantify seed germination with no treatment (Experiment 1) and identify an efficient method of breaking dormancy in Schizolobium amazonicum Huber ex Ducke seeds (Experiment 2). The effects of manual scarification on electric emery, water at 80ºC and 100ºC and manual scarification on wood sandpaper were studied. Seeds were sown either immediately after scarification or after immersion in water for 24h in a sand and sawdust mixture. Germination and hard seed percentages and germination speed were recorded and analyzed in a completely randomized design. Analysis of germination was carried out at six, nine, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 days after sowing as a 4x2 factorial design and through regression analysis. Treatment means of the remaining variables were compared by the Tukey test. Seed germination with no treatment started on the 7 th day after sowing and reached 90% on the 2310 th day (Experiment 1). Significant interaction between treatments to overcome dormancy and time of immersion in water was observed (Experiment 2). In general, immersion in water increased the germination in most evaluations. The regression analyses were significant for all treatments with exception of the control treatment and immersion in water at 80ºC. Germination speed was higher when seeds were scarified on an abrasive surface (emery and sandpaper) and, in these treatments, the germination ranged from 87% to 96%, with no hard seeds. S. amazonicum seeds coats are impermeable to water, which hinders quick and uniform germination. Scarification on electric emery followed by immediate sowing, scarification on sandpaper followed by immediate sowing and sowing after 24h were the most efficient treatments for overcoming dormancy in S. amazonicum seeds. comparadas através do teste de Tukey.
