Objective: To evaluate the responsiveness of the Spanish version of the Newcastle Stroke-specific Quality of Life measure (NEWSQOL) to assess quality of life in Spanish people after suffering a stroke. Design: A prospective observational study was conducted to assess the responsiveness of the Spanish version of NEWSQOL. The sample contained 128 patients who filled in the questionnaires before and after a physical therapy intervention. The responsiveness was assessed with p-values using the effect size (ES) and the standardized response means (SRMs) of the change. Besides, two other external criteria were used to distinguish patients who improved with the treatment from those who remained stable. This classification was based on one functional independence measure (the Barthel Index) and one disability measure (the modified Rankin Scale). Results: There was a statistically significant correlation (Spearman’s coefficient = p < 0.01) between the domains of the Spanish version of NEWSQOL in relation to the Barthel Index and the modified Rankin Scale. All domains showed between marked-to-mild change responsiveness except sleep and relationships; mobility (ES 0.66 and SRM 0.92) and activities of daily living (ES 0.75 and SRM 0.87) were markedly responsive; communication (ES 0.38 and SRM 0.61) was moderately responsive; and pain, vision, cognition, feelings, emotions and fatigue were mildly responsive (ES 0.21-0.41 and SRM 0.23-0.44). Conclusion: The Spanish version of NEWSQOL shows between marked and mild responsiveness to measure the perception of QoL in post-stroke patients. Therefore, its use can be suitable for evaluation studies, clinical trials and clinical practice.

IntroductionDance is an intrinsically motivating activity that includes social interaction, stimulation through music, the pleasure of moving despite pathology-induced motor limitations, and it also has good perceived benefits among participants. Feeling pleasure while moving is essential to finding the motivation to engage in a rehabilitation programme. It is, therefore, urgent to provide persons in a poststroke situation with motivating physical activity opportunities. Very few studies have examined dance in a stroke context, while it is highly adapted and effective for other chronic conditions.Our primary objective is to assess the effects of dance programme on patients’ balance control after stroke. Our secondary objective is to investigate the effects of dance on cognitive function, strength, coordination, functional status, balance confidence, quality of life, motivation and adherence. Our hypothesis is that dance increases balance and motor capacities, and improves poststroke quality of life, adherence and motivation.Methods and analysisForty-eight subjects with stroke in subacute phase will be randomised into two groups: (1) intervention (dance and standard rehabilitation) and (2) control (standard rehabilitation). Before intervention, stroke severity, cognitive abilities and motor capacities will be assessed. Two baseline tests will be planned to evaluate the stability of individuals. Participants will attend a weekly 60-min dance class for 6 weeks. Cognitive and motor functions (balance, lower-limbs strength, coordination and motor level), quality of life (Stroke-Specific Quality of Life Scale) will be measured at weeks 4 and 6 in both groups. Participant satisfaction with regard to dance will be tested, as well as adherence and adverse effects.Ethics and disseminationEthics approval has been granted by the Swiss Ethics Committee of the CER Vaud (2019-01467). Outcomes will be disseminated through publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.Trial registration numberNCT04120467.

The Influence of Neurological Rehabilitation on Patients’ Quality of Life After Ischemic Stroke: A Prospective Study in Romania

Background: Stroke is a public health problem in Romania, with important medical, social and financial implications, and sustained efforts are being made to improve post-stroke rehabilitation phase. A significant concern nowadays is the patient's quality of life (QOL); a successful stroke recovery therapy implies the increasing of QOL index. However, there are very few studies evaluating patients' QOL after stroke in Romania. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits that 1-year rehabilitation therapy brings to a patient with a history of ischemic stroke, highlighting the factors that influence the QOL index. Methods: A prospective study was conducted in which the QOL (calculated using the stroke-specific QOL (SSQOL) questionnaire) was measured in a group of 40 patients who had suffered an ischemic stroke in the left middle cerebral artery territory and benefited from rehabilitation therapy for 1 year. Patients admitted in our Neurology Department between January 2018 and June 2019 were divided into several subgroups according to age, gender, domicile, educational level, familial support and comorbidities. Statistical data were processed in SPSS v.20. Results: Among the individual factors studied, young age (under 60) showed a positive impact on QOL improvement after 1 year of stroke rehabilitation therapy (P = 0.005). This was explained by the young patient's profile, with urban domicile (55% vs. 45%), higher educational level (60% vs. 40%) and family support. The best recovered functions as noted by the questionnaire were language (18.25 ± 4.95; P = 0.015), upper motor functions (21.50 ± 2.70; P = 0.039), personality (12 ± 0.81; P = 0.032) and family roles (11.53 ± 1.81; P = 0.007). On the other hand, patient's gender (male 155.55 ± 31.21 vs. female 152.94 ± 28.14) did not influence the outcome of the therapy (P = 0.267). Conclusion: Stroke rehabilitation treatment is an essential component for improving the QOL of the patient after stroke; it has become topic of concern in the literature nowadays. This work complements the existing data on this topic for stroke patients in Romania.
