“…Higher education institutions (HEIs) must be able to support the long-term enactment of global and local climate change policies (by research, education and knowledge transfer missions) (Leal Filho, 2010). HEIs also have a critical and crucial role in climate change adaptation providing professional multidisciplinary and intersectoral skills to face this Global Change and Societal Challenge (Morgado et al, 2017;Santos et al, 2016;Leal Filho, 2010), participate in the local community (education, research and pilot projects to build their resilience) (Leal Filho et al, 2016;Viegas et al, 2016) and enable indigenous communities to access clean technology to mitigate the effect of climate change (Leal Filho et al, 2016;Setti et al, 2016;Yoko and Audrey, 2015).…”

“…Globally, extreme events have been stimulating or forcing the displacement of populations. The rising sea level that has led to the destruction of cultivated fields and to the reduction of fish availability for large populations, for example, has forced local populations to change their practices (Viegas et al, 2016) or caused displacement as well as forced or voluntary migration (Carraro, 2015;Wilbanks et al, 2007). No region in the world is immune to the consequences of climate change.…”

“…The memory-based FEK has been adopted to recall past environmental conditions by devising indicators of the habitat’s pristine status, defined as historical baselines (McQuatters-Gollop et al 2019 ). FEK has played a complementary role to traditional science systems by detecting a variety of long-term changes in: ecosystems’ structure (Viegas et al 2016 ); fish catches (Beaudreau and Levin 2014 ; Coll et al 2014 ; Martins et al 2018 ) and benthic diversity (Bastari et al 2017 ); and by providing information on species’ ecology and behaviour (Gaspare et al 2015 ). The qualitative approach of FEK has improved fisheries management (Novacek and Cleland 2001 ; Barclay et al 2017 ; McQuatters-Gollop et al 2019 ) and has enabled scientists to enhance sampling and formulate new hypotheses for research (Silvano and Valbo-Jørgensen 2008 ).…”
