Formulating a Long Term Strategy for Sustainable Palm Oil Biodiesel Development in Indonesia

Abstract: Indonesia, the largest producer of palm oil, has been developed palm oil biodiesel as renewable energy in the last decade. Indonesia biodiesel development policies aim to increase domestic value added of palm oil product and reduce the reliance on fossil fuel. Indonesia has embarked on a co mprehensive palm oil biodiesel program since 2006 and targeted the 20% b iodiesel b lend (B20) in 2016. This art icle exp lores the strategy formulat ion by accommodate the stakeholder perspective in the problems and the so… Show more

“…In addition, Khatiwada et al research [14] shows that Indonesia's palm oil industry can develop nationally and internationally without expanding oil palm plantations since Indonesia can meet its domestic demand for CPO by 2025 by using about 63 percent of the area planted with oil palm in 2014. While research [5] shows that the development of sustainable biodiesel feedstock is the first key to sustainable biodiesel development in Indonesia.…”

“…Previous research shows that Indonesia's policy of supporting the use of renewable energy through the mandatory use of biodiesel as a mixture for diesel fuel has a significant impact on increasing the use of biodiesel, even though this target has not yet reached 100 percent [4]. In addition, Purwanto et al [5] shows that developing sustainable biodiesel raw materials is the first key to sustainable biodiesel in Indonesia, where the criteria for environmentally friendly raw materials are socially acceptable and economically viable. Therefore, the government should secure the supply of CPO as feedstock for biodiesel by providing sustainable oil palm plantations exclusive to biodiesel.…”

“…The attempts to improve the biodiesel implementation also included in-depth analysis regarding network of actors in biodiesel business. For example, Purwanto et al [6] proposed a long-term strategy for sustainable biodiesel development in Indonesia based on the SWOT-analysis and Multi Actor Approach. According to the study, GoI has to secure palm oil for biodiesel production, enhance sustainability of palm oil plantation, and improve collaboration with other stakeholders.…”
