The article deals with the role of language study in improving the level of tolerance and cross-ethnic interaction between students of higher educational institutions. The research methodology is based on the combination of general scientific and special methods that was ensured by the introduction of appropriate forms and methods of education, as well as the principles of objectivity, student-centricity, research and its results’ verification. The systemic analysis of normative acts, documents and international experience resulted in deeper understanding of basic notions of research and the importance of foreign language learning in the formation of tolerance and cross-ethnic interaction. At the initial stage of the experiment, low level of the tolerance formation and cross-ethnic interaction in the process of learning a foreign language was determined. This is due to inability to conduct intercultural dialogue, misunderstanding of ethnic and cultural differences in the process of communication. This prompted development and implementation the authors’ educational model, which provided realization of interactive forms and methods of learning as well as students’ involvement into socio-cultural educational environment. The outcomes of final empirical research highlighted positive dynamics of tolerance formation of higher educational institutions’ students when learning the discipline «Foreign Language for Professional Purposes».

One of the important aspects observed in the association of students in higher education today is the attitude of tolerance towards other people. At the Teaching and Education Faculty of Tadulako University, many students come from various ethnicities, religions, regions and have different language backgrounds. Tadulako University students have heterogeneous and multicultural characteristics. In the context of this research, it focuses on the design of a tolerance learning model in preparing students as global citizens. The writing of this article uses a descriptive qualitative research approach with a case study method. The tolerance learning design developed is oriented to make a good contribution to efforts to reveal tolerance values for students and appreciate the reality of diversity that exists in the campus environment. Object of research: Pedagogical conditions for the development of tolerance in students of teacher training colleges in extracurricular activities Solved problem: Attracting students of pedagogical colleges to such activities as: research, artistic and aesthetic, value-oriented, organizational and managerial allowed creating the conditions necessary for developing cooperation skills, harmonizing different views, self-orientation in a given situation. The urgency of the problem of promoting tolerance among students of teacher training colleges, since the spiritual revival of modern Ukrainian society depends on future teachers. The main scientific results: According to the results of the seminar "To increase the tolerance of future teachers", the vast majority of mentors of student groups found a high level of readiness to cultivate tolerance among students of teacher training colleges (75.0 %). For example, conducting a training lesson “What is tolerance?” aimed: to bring students closer to a deeper understanding of the "tolerance" phenomenon; contribute to improving student relationships on the principles of tolerance. Such forms as discussions turned out to be effective (“Why is it difficult to be tolerant in our life?”, “Yes and no”, etc.), Classes with training elements (“What is tolerance?”, “Life tree”, “Seven areas of tolerance training”); project activities, video presentations, dramas, the solution of problem situations and the use of reflective, empathic, dialogical techniques and the like. The field of practical use of the research results: Attracting students of pedagogical colleges to such activities as: research, artistic and aesthetic, value-oriented, organizational and managerial allowed creating the conditions necessary for developing cooperation skills, harmonizing different views, self-orientation in that or other situation. Innovative technological product: The pedagogical conditions for the development of tolerance among students of teacher training colleges in extracurricular activities are characterized, namely: the methodological preparation of mentors of student groups for the education of tolerance among students of teacher training colleges; substantial and methodological support of the process of cultivating tolerance among students of teacher training colleges; attracting students of teacher training colleges to socio-cultural activities aimed at promoting tolerance. The scope of the innovative technological product: The material of the article can be used by mentors of student groups of teacher training colleges, as well as curators and students of higher educational institutions.
