Formation of Dual Threshold in a Vertical Alignment Liquid Crystal Device

Abstract: We present a method that enables dual threshold voltages in a vertical alignment liquid crystal device, through which the gamma shift can be reduced with no subsequent decrease in the contrast ratio. By forming polymer layers, the threshold voltage shift is accomplished through the utilization of the voltage drop effect. We expect that the proposed method can be applied to the conventional 4-domain mode in order to achieve an 8-domain mode without the need for complex driving schemes.

“…The threshold voltage can be defined as the applied voltage when the LC cell has 10% of the maximum transmittance. 3942 The threshold voltage is an important factor in determining how much energy is required to reorient the directors of the LC medium. A decrease in the threshold voltage can be evidence for the fact that the director of the LC medium is slightly tilted.…”

“…POM images and voltage-dependent transmittance (VT) curves of the fabricated PS auto-MDVA cell with the pretilt angle were investigated to confirm the enhancement of electro-optic properties, such as threshold voltage and response times. “…To improve the off-axis image quality, various methods have been proposed for realization of the multi-domain VA mode [5][6][7][8][9][10]. Recently, an eight-domain structure for reduction of the gamma shift was proposed by using additional thin-film transistors or capacitors [8][9][10].…”

“…The ITO electrode is used not only in LCDs but also in many displays such as organic light emitting diodes (OLED) and quantum dot light emitting diodes (QLED) [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. In addition, the alignment layer that determines the initial orientation of the LC is also important, and the most commonly used material for this layer is polyimide (PI) [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. The LC can be uniformly aligned along a desired direction through the interactions of the LC molecules at the molecular level.…”
