“…Parallel to the purely theoretical attempt to include semantic observations in the framework of generative or transformational analysis, (e.g., Katz and Fodor, 1964;Katz and Postal, 1965), a whole list of far more specific and practical studies must be included, in sociology, ethnology, even in literary criticism, where all the various methods described aim to bring into relief the meanings underlying the most diverse texts, from interviews, questionnaires, press clippings (e.g., Stone, 1967), or folk tales and myths (e.g., Maranda, 1967), to tragedies and novels, all sorts, and not only written works, but also publicity pictures, films, buildings, city maps, etc. These methods are inspired by linguistic studies, which is natural today, but specialists in linguistics have no monopoly on their conception and even less on their exercise.…”
